Warlock Feature: Occult Adaptation

Occult Adaptation (Optional)

Not all Warlocks ask their patrons for known magic. Some instead seek to gather more knowledge of the occult and the unknown.

When you reach a level where you would gain a new spell slot (2nd, 11th, and 17th) you can instead learn two new invocations.

If you decided to use this feature in the past, when you gain a level in this class you can choose to reduce the number of invocations you know by two to gain a spell slot. You cannot have more spell slots than are shown for your level in the Warlock Table.

New Invocations

In a separate document I have made a list of existing and new invocations inspired by those in D&D 3.5e that work very well with this new feature in mind. Of course you could just use the existing 5e invocation list, this is just an additional option. If you are interested in learning more you can find that here.

Goal of this Update

Warlocks are an incredibly versatile class. In addition to being a spell caster you are given much flexibility in choosing your class features through the Eldritch Invocations. However, with so many interesting/flavorful options in the invocations it can be difficult to choose between interesting invocations and the powerful eldritch blast invocations. My wish for the class would be to give them more invocations.

Unfortunately for a balanced update we cannot just give a class more of what it already has. I took inspiration from the origin of the Warlock in D&D, 3.5e. Back then Warlocks only had access to Invocations and eldritch blast (plus some other features which helped their survivability, but those are not important here). They did not have access to any traditional spell casting. This allowed them to fulfill the single target magical at-will blaster along with interesting spell-like invocations.

My idea for how to allow Warlocks the chance to improve their eldritch blast and have interesting invocations is to give them the option to reduce their traditional spell casting abilities to be able to increase their invocations known.
