Tome Spirit Sorcerous Origin

Tome Sorcerous Origin Blurb

The magic of knowledge has coloured your own, giving you power over information and manifestation of your new being. The power of words and knowledge is said to be mightier than the sword, and knowledge is what you are and what you crave and so power you shall have. No matter how you awakened this power it is nonetheless yours to gather knowledge for good, for selfish reasons, or for the ruination of your enemies. Your pursuit might seem extreme but for you it is essential, it is life.

Tome Spirit Origins

Your magic manifests as a tome, the reason for this are numerous if you are uncertain you can roll on the table below or just use it for inspiration.

3 The body you now inhabit was once the one attuned to you a sentient spirit within a magical tome, your magical essence and the body have now mixed giving you a new way to experience life.
4 An ancestor of yours was a spirit of knowledge and that union manifested its magic in you.

Book Spells

1st-level Tome Feature

You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Book Spells table. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn't count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.

Whenever you gain a sorcerer level, you can replace one spell you gained from this feature with another spell of the same level. The new spell must be a Divination, or ritual tagged spell from the sorcerer or wizard spell list.

Book Spells
Sorcerer Level Spells
1st Identify, Comprehend Languages
3rd Magic Mouth, Silence
5th Clairvoyance, Magic Circle
7th Divination, Arcane Eye
9th Telepathic Bond, Commune with Nature

Manifest Tome

1st-level Tome Spirit feature

Your innate magic takes the form of a tome (old, stylized, decorated, up to you), which you can manifest or dismiss as an action, the book can float within 5ft of you, weighs nothing, can open by itself to any page that you desire and cannot be targeted by hostile effects.

Every spell you know appears in this book as a manifestation of your innate sorcery, the information that appears in the book is illegible to others unless you consciously decide that something can be read, you can make these readability rules as complicated as you want, be it "only under the light of a new born moon with a story just told of bravery and thus one spell at random within the tome can be read", "my friends can read the tome", or "anyone can read the first word of every sentence".

This tome does not count as a spellbook, spells cannot be copied into it nor can spell be copied out of it. The tome does however count as a spellcasting focus when it is manifested. When you die the text within disappears and a normal tome remains.

Ritual Casting

1st-level Tome Spirit feature

You can cast any sorcerer spells as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have your Tome manifested.

Flavour before function

The tome is not something that can be harmed, it is something physical yet purely intangible unless you want to use it that way. Remember to flavour your spells to include your tome.

Knowledge Glutton

6th-level Tome Spirit feature

Should you come across writing be it on scrolls, books or tomes you can over the course of 10 minutes consume the texts and add it to your collection of knowledge. When you manifest your Tome, you can choose to have any texts you have consumed appear in the tome or in separate books and binders, while manifested this way you have the same readability control as your tome.

Knowledge is Half the Battle

6th-level Tome Spirit feature

When a spell is being cast within 60ft of you while your tome is manifest and that spell is contained within, your tome instantly flips to the correct page and you recognize what spell it is and what level it is being cast at. If you are targeted by that spell then you have advantage on any saving throw it would impose on you.

You have advantage on any ability check using your spellcasting ability when countering or dispelling spells within your tome.

Stable Spells

14th-level Tome Spirit feature

Your Tome helps you stabilize your spells against disruption your spells benefit in the following ways:

  • When your concentration fails, the spell effect persists until the start of your turn instead of ending immediately.

  • If one of your spells is being countered or dispelled the one doing the disruption has to make a spellcasting ability check against your spell save DC. On a failed check the spell dissipates with no effect, and the action, Bonus Action, or Reaction used to cast it is wasted. If that spell was cast with a spell slot, the slot isn't expended.

Tome Incarnation

18th-level Tome Spirit feature

You and your tome become as one, as an action you can manifest yourself as a Tome Spirit and for 1 minutes you gain the following effects:

  • You gain a flying speed (hover) equal to your walking speed
  • You have resistance to bludgeoning, slashing, piercing and force damage.
  • When you make a spell attack you can add 1d4, and your spell save DC increases by 2.

Once you use this feature, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you spend 7 sorcery points to use it again.
