Primal Path
At 3rd level, a barbarian gains the Primal Path feature, which offers you the choice of a subclass. We present here a revamped option available to you when making that choice.
Path of the Berserker
Blow after blow, cutting flesh and shattering bones, Berserkers abandon themselves to a deeper and deeper ecstasy. They battle as though partaking in a feast, lost in the movements of their own body, harmonious and savage, drunk on blood and meat, relishing each scream of pain – both their own and those of their foes. Their rage is a beastly and visceral kind of meditation, a terrifying apparition of pure, untamed violence.
Battle Trance
3rd-level Path of the Berserker feature
You lose yourself in the rhythm and flow of battle, each blow being struck with deeper and deeper abandonment. While you are raging, each time you use Reckless Attack and the attack hits a creature, your rage damage bonus increases by 1, up to a maximum increase equal to your Constitution modifier. Your rage damage bonus resets to normal if you use the Attack action without using Reckless Attack, or when your rage ends.
Additionally while you are raging, when you hit a creature with a Reckless Attack and you bring that creature to 0 hit points, you can make a single weapon attack as a bonus action.
Destructive Instinct
3rd-level Path of the Berserker feature
There is only a single way to respond to fear, and there can be no luck in attempting to tame your mind. While raging, the frightened condition subjects you to the following effects instead of its normal ones:
- You have disadvantage on attack rolls that don't target the source of your fear.
- You can only willingly move towards the source of your fear.
Additionally, you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed.
Furious Charge
6th-level Path of the Berserker feature
You throw yourself into the fray, charging the enemy with implacable fury. When you take the Attack action on your turn while raging, you can move up to your speed toward a hostile creature before making your attacks.
Terrifying Assault
10th-level Path of the Berserker feature
Even the bravest of warriors find themselves shivering at the sight of your battle rage. When you hit a creature with
a Reckless Attack, you can cause any number of creatures of your choice within 30 feet of you that can see you to make a Wisdom saving throw. Creatures that took damage from you in the same turn that you use this feature have disadvantage on the saving throw. On a failed save, they are frightened of you until the end of their next turn. The DC of the saving throw equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain expended uses when you finish a long rest. When you score a critical hit, you can use this feature without expending a use, even if you have no uses available.
Army of One
14th-level Path of the Berserker feature
You achieve transcendence through battle, you become one with violence. While raging, you gain the following benefits:
- When you use Reckless Attack, you can make an additional weapon attack as part of the same attack action.
- When you take damage from a creature that is within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against that creature.
