Order of Strategists

The order of strategists specializes in the art of combat, both maneuvering themselves and their allies so as to best meet their foes in battle. Having a wizard with you makes you a frightful foe, but having a strategist at your side makes you an undeniable threat that must be dealt with.

Shape Spell

2nd level Strategist feature

As a strategist you understand the importance that the shape of your spells take when applying them in battle. You've mastered a way to reshape the formula of your spells to change their areas of effect.

When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its area of effect (cones, cubes, cylinders, lines, or spheres) with a special area of effect that you control. This special area is represented by a number of 5 foot cubes that you have as shown on the Shape Spell table. When a spell refers to one of the area of effects listed above you can choose to replace it with this special area of effect. You may place your 5 foot cubes anywhere within the range of the spell you choose to alter this way. The cubes must be adjacent to each other, and a face of the cube must be touching the face of another cube when you place them. Additionally, you are able to stack them on top of each other to create a pillar.

Level Number of Cubes
2 6
6 8
10 10
14 12
20 16

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

War Knowledge

2nd level Strategist feature

You become proficient in the history skill if you aren't already. Additionally, you gain proficiency in shields.

Tactical Placement

6th level Strategist feature

During a long rest you can select a number of creatures equal to your Intelligence modifier to grant a bonus to their initiative rolls equal to half your Intelligence modifier (rounded down), and when you roll Initiative you can use your reaction to switch the result of the initiative roll of two creatures who were granted this bonus. Additionally, those two creatures can move up to their speed as a reaction. Once you use this reaction, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest.

Defensive Formation

10th level Strategist feature

When you cast one of the following spells: Wall of Fire, Wall of Force, Wall of Ice, Wall of Light, Wall of Sand, Wall of Stone, or Wall of Water. You can double their dimensions as part of casting them, and creatures under your Tactical Placement feature within 10 feet of a wall you cast this way have half cover. You can use this feature an amount of times equal to half your Intelligence modifier (rounded down), and you regain all uses when you finish a long rest.

Grand Strategist

14th level Strategist feature

As you reach your mastery over strategy and planning you gain the following benefits:

  • When you use your Shape Spell feature you no longer need to place the cubes adjacent to each other and can place them anywhere within the range of the spell you use the feature on.
  • While you are concentrating on a wall spell empowered by your Defensive Formation, you can use your bonus action to issue a command to a creature who can hear you or see you. They may use their reaction to take the Dash action.
