Phoenixborn Aasimar
Celestial influence on one's bloodline can take many forms, and come from many sources. Among the least-known of all aasimar are Phoenixborn - beings whose blood is blessed by an Elysian firebird. While most phoenixes are considered elemental creatures, those hailing from the Upper Planes carry divine influence with them, and can pass it on to mortals whose paths they cross.
Phoenixborn aasimar can see their personalities reflect their elemental influences. They can be stubborn, impetuous, and rash. But they can also be loyal, and are often intense champions of goodness, as phoenixes themselves often are.
Creating Your Character
When you create a Phoenixborn Aasimar, you get all the base traits of the Aasimar species, and also the traits listed below.
Ability Score Increase
Your Dexterity or Constitution score increases by 1.
Flame Bearer
(Replaces Light Bearer) You know the produce flame cantrip. Charisma is your spellcasting abilitiy for it.
Firebird's Resistance
(Replaces Celestial Resistance) You have resistance to fire damage and radiant damage.
Firebird's Feather
(Replaces Healing Hands) You can hand another creature a magic phoenix feather, giving it a portion of your abilities for miraculous rebirth. While a creature possesses this feather, they gain advantage on death saving throws.
The feather disappears after a long rest, or whenever its bearer rolls a 20 on a death saving throw. You can create one such feather, regaining the ability after a long rest.
Fiery Aspect
Starting at 3rd level, you can use your action to ignite the phoenix-fires you carry within your soul for 1 minute. Your body is wreathed in white fire, and wings of flame unfurl from your back. You gain a 30-foot fly speed, and can choose to channel healing or harmful flames.
- Healing: At the start of each of your turns, one conscious creature of your choice below half its maximum hit points within 30 feet recovers hit points equal to your proficiency bonus.
- Harmful: At the start of each of your turns, you are wreathed in flame. The first time a creature hits you with a melee attack, they suffer fire damage equal to your level, and the flames are extinguished.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Species Feats
The following are options for feats which can be selected only by phoenixborn characters.
Fiery Rebirth
You manifest some of the phoenix's power for resurrection. You can now use your Fiery Aspect ability before you would roll a death saving throw. If you do so, you may treat the d20 result as if you rolled a 20 on the die, and you gain temporary hit points equal to your level. In addition, your Fiery Aspect can now be used after completing a short or long rest.
