Warlock Pact
The Storm
You have made pact with a tempestuous being, born of wind and rain. An ancient elemental, powerful storm giant, or perhaps a demigod of disagreeable weather. What they sought through you may vary, but the mere touch of their powers causes the storm winds to bend the knee.
Expanded Spell List
These spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.
Storm Spells
Spell Level | Spells |
---|---|
1st | feather fall, thunderwave |
2nd | gust of wind, warding wind |
3rd | lightning bolt, sleet storm |
4th | storm sphere, summon elemental |
5th | control winds, maelstorm |
Stormform
You manifest an aspect of your patron's power. As a bonus action, you transform for 1 minute, gaining these benefits:
- You are under the effects of the Levitate spell.
- Once during each of your turns, when you hit a creature with an attack roll, you can force it to make a Strength saving throw, and if it fails, you can either knock the target prone or move it 5 ft in any direction not closer to you.
- You can cast Gust as a bonus action.
You can transform this way twice per long rest. You may instead spend a warlock spell slot to use this feature, if you do so, its duration changes according to this chart, but requires concentration:
Spell Level | Duration (concentration) |
---|---|
1 | 1 min. |
2 | 10 min. |
3 | 1 hour. |
4 | 4 hours. |
5 | 8 hours. |
Storm Emissary
Starting at 6th level, your patron imprints your magic. You may replace the damage type of any spell you cast to lightning or thunder. You gain an additional use of Stormform.
Additionally, once per turn, whenever you deal thunder or lightning damage while in Stormform, you can select a damaged creature to suffer additional effects depending on the damage dealt:
- Thunder: it can't take reactions until the end of your next turn, but it becomes immune to this effect for 1 minute.
- Lightning: a bolt of lightning leaps to a nearby enemy. Select a creature near the chosen creature that didn't take the triggering lightning damage. That other creature takes the same lightning damage the original creature took minus the number of ft the bolt had to travel.
Guarded by the Storm
Starting at 10th level, you gain resistance to lightning damage, which becomes immunity in your Stormform.
The winds also help you and your allies. If you're outdoors or in a place with wind, you don't fall unless you choose to do so. You may cast Feather Fall at will with no components but with a range of 30 ft.
Everstorm
Starting at 14th level, whenever you are concentrating on a spell, you can choose to be under the effects of Stormform for as long as you're concentrating on said spell.
Once per long rest you can cast Wind Walk without components and without spending a spell slot.
Additional Eldritch Invocations
Wind Whisperer
The wind acts in unison with you. You don't get disadvantage when attacking a prone creature with a ranged attack if it is prone because of a spell or effect granted by this subclass.
When you cast a spell present in this subclass that imposes the deafened or prone condition, you can select a number of creatures equal to your PB to not suffer them.
Stormblessed
Prerequisite: 3rd level
Add Call Lightning to the Storm Spells expanded list. While you're within the area of effect of a spell granted by this subclass, you gain the benefits of the Bless spell. You gain this benefit even if someone else has cast the area spell, but if you cast it, you need to have done so with a spell slot.
Stormcaller
Prequisite: 15th level
You learn the spell Control Weather and can cast it without expending a spell slot. When you cast it in this way, and change the Precipitation or Wind, you can only increase it.
Pact of the Storm Quirks
The following are some optional quirks a player who makes a Pact of the Tempest might manifest. (by KibblesTasty)
d6 | Quirk |
---|---|
1 | You dream of flying frequently... sometimes while awake. |
2 | You lack any precaution for going out in storms. |
3 | Stillness bothers you, you abhor complete silence. |
4 | You feel all things must change, nothing lasts forever. Somethings need help not lasting forever. |
5 | Little crackles of lightning surround you when you get emotional. |
6 | Your belongings are frequently statically charged when other people touch them. |

Additional indications
I wanted to create a mechanically interesting subclass that felt like someone able to control the winds and thunder, that rewarded choosing the flavorfull options rather than occasionally comboing a couple of things like the Tempest Cleric or the Storm Sorcerer do.
- To create it I took the skeleton (hehe) of the Undead Warlock to develop something that felt similar to what KibblesTasty proposed, but simpler and, in my opinion, a bit more table friendly.
- I am aware the spell list isn't the best, specially for a Warlock, but the idea is to spend your slots into having more uses of Stormform, and if you spend them in the Storm Spells, you do so to enter the storm with the Stormblessed invocation and maybe without some of its friendly fire drawbacks thanks to Wind Whisperer.
- It requires testing, but i'd say it wouldn't be a low tier warlock subclass in terms of power, specially in campaigns where concentrationless levitate (pseudo-flying) is a game changer.
- This hasn't been designed with multiclassing in mind, though several edits have been made to avoid exploitation. If a player choses to multiclass it, i'd recommend cautionally imposing the following line: "Any spell transmuted by Storm Emissary can't benefit from any positive alterations to its damage that it wouldn't get if it had its original damage type". Still, i'd say it's pretty good to stay in the class until levels 9-11, and sticking until 14 is decently rewarded.
- If you have access to The Elements and Beyond, by D&D Unleashed, and you take the Pact of the Chain, talk with your DM about having Blowing Spirit or Spark Spirit as your familiar. It might require balancing, though.
- Quick reminder of Bonus Action casting Gust: if you do, you then can't cast a leveled spell with your action.
