Namahage Clan

"Iona, Ishtar, Livewire Employee, Traitor; so many masks. Too bad none of them carried power, unlike mine..”

— Emeria Namahage

Proficient mask carvers and festival performers, the Namahage are extreme even by the standards of a Shinobi. When their mask is removed, they live the life of an ordinary person. Only when their faces are concealed do they take action.

Sacred Masks

It is believed the masks came about after an ancient ritual long ago, binding the spirits of the Namahage to ancient heroes, legends, mythical beasts, and even the elements themselves.

When a Namahage fully matures, a charm will appear to them in a time of great need. Utilising this charm in a Kabuki-esque dance, it will shift to their forehead before swiftly changing into a mask. With their mask, they are able to fight even the strongest of ninja. These masks are often carried around in their charm state, hanging on special loops placed along belts or sashes.

Upon the death of a clan member, their masks shatter into pieces. The mask carvers of the clan will remake the fallen's original mask, storing it within a sacred shrine.

Prized Possessions

Tools of the Trade

The trinkets and masks of the Namahage are more than techniques, material reminders of history and the world itself. Although they are fiercely guarded, they are not invulnerable.

The features 'Your True Self' and each additional feature selected are kept as individual trinkets that must be carried on your person to be activated. The trinkets have an ac of 20 unless your current ac is higher. Their total hp is equal to your proficiency bonus times five. They are immune to area of effect attacks and damage dealt to them may be taken by their owner instead.

Trinkets can be targeted for theft using sleight of hand, taking one random trinket per successful roll. These attempts are always contested. Stolen trinkets can be activated once by other Namahage, granting them their benefits before breaking. Losing your trinket removes access to its corresponding feature until it is recovered or remade.

If you are unable to retrieve your trinkets before their destruction, you must forge them anew. The process is extraneous at the best of times, requiring two succesful crafting checks with DC's equal to your current rank times five plus ten with an additional cost of one thousand ryo per your current rank. Each success restores one trinket. The difficult process takes one month to complete.

When trinkets are activated, they mold together to form your mask. Masks cannot be damaged or stolen.

"To some, these trinkets are nothing. The garnishes of a decadent performer. Let them indulge in their misconceptions, as you must never, ever lose your most prized possessions.”
