Haunted Blade

Weapon (long sword), very rare (requires attunement)

You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls you make with this weapon.

When you draw this sword from its sheath, the ghost of its last owner appears in an unoccupied space within 15 feet of you. This ghost uses the Fallen Warrior stat block (shown below). The ghost acts on its own initiative, is friendly to you but ignores your commands. The ghost spends its turns attacking or trying to attack the creature that you last attacked with this sword. If the ghost cannot see the last creature you attacked with this sword, if takes the dodge action instead. If you sheathe the sword, the ghost disappears. If the ghost is reduced to 0 hitpoints, it disappears and will not appear again when the sword is drawn until the next dawn.

Cursed item. At any time while you are conscious, the ghost may attempt to possess you. When it does, you must make a Charisma ability check contested by one made by the ghost (it uses the Fallen Warrior stat block), on a failure, you become possessed, you remain conscious and aware but the ghost gains complete control of your body. You can repeat the contested ability check at the end of each hour after being possessed, ending all effects on a success. Once the ghost has attempted to posses you this way, it can't do so again until the next dawn.

Additionally, if you die while attuned to this sword, your soul is absorbed by the sword and you become the ghost that haunts it.

Incorporeal Movement. The ghost can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an object.

Actions

Multiattack. The Fallen Warrior makes two ghostblade attacks.

Ghostblade. Melee weapon attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1d10 + 6 cold damage

Fallen Warrior

The DM determines the fallen warrior's race, appearance, personality, alignment and goals. Alternatively, the DM can use the Fallen Warrior Table included below.

1 Wandering Champion. A noble knight, they will defend the weak and dedicate themselves to good causes.
2 Cowardly Thief. A thief that stole the sword, they will try to steal from those around them, horde wealth and avoid fighting.
3 Glory Seeker. A famed duelist, they will challenge anyone they perceive as strong to a duel.
4 Heart Stealer. A serial seducer, they will attempt to seduce anyone they find attractive.
5 Sword of Justice. A famed inquisitor, they will attempt to bring the guilty to justice and stop crime.
6 Deadly Killer. A serial killer that murdered many, they will try to harm those around them and commit evil acts.
