Spider Climb. The spider can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

Ambush Predator. The spider moves with such speed that Surprised creatures are considered Blind to it, granting it advantage on attacks and making it possible for the spider to return under its trap before its seen. The movement of the trap door is loud, sounding of breaking branches.

Trapdoor. The spider can, over the course of 10 minutes, use its webbing & natural fauna to create a large naturally camoflauged trap door over the entrance of its tunnels. The trap door provides 3/4 cover to the spider inside, and can be lifted by size huge creatures as part of their movement. If set aflame, it burns away after one round, falling on those below it & dealing 14 (4d6) fire damage.

Actions

Multiattack. The spider makes two foreleg attacks & one bite attack.

Grasping Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 24 (4d8 + 6) piercing damage. The creature is then pulled prone, landing underneath the spider.

Jagged Foreleg. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (4d6 + 6) piercing damage. If the creature is prone, the spider may pin them down with that leg; they are considered Restrained.

How the Mantrap Spider Hunts

The Mantrap spider lives in hills & cliffsides, where it can easily make a burrow for itself and create a trapdoor. It's not uncommon for a merchant or traveler to disappear from their convoy with little more than a thunderous sound accompanying it. Once, a guard even reported seeing one briefly appear before stealing the horse out from under him!

The Mantrap spider lays in wait, relying on its Ambush Predator & Grasping Bite abilities to pick off one prey from a crowd, hiding behind its Trapdoor for additional protection when it is found. A Jagged Foreleg can make it difficult to fight back, but a smart wizard could Misty Step back to the other side of the trap door.

If its prey flees successfully, the Mantrap Spider would usually rather flee through its tunnels and seek out new prey than take on several opponents at once.
