Shade

Do not fear the dark of Terovia. It's not the dark that kills you, but what lurks within it. Fear the creatures of the dark that haunt your dreams, fear the hunger that gnaws within. Do not fear the dark, fear the shadows and, most of all, fear the shades.

An Undead Race

Shadows, incorporeal undead spirits that torment the living, are common throughout the Multiverse. Usually these undead are mindless drones that seek merely to destroy. Sometimes though, these shadows may gain sentience and a will and mind of their own. Usually these sentient shadows, called shades, will only remember flashes of their past life. A lot don't even remember their own name.

Mysterious Origins

The origin of shades is still a mystery. Some believe that shadows become shades if they devour a particularly magical creature, others because they've existed for hundreds of years, and others still that they do not occur naturally, but are created by liches and necromancers for nefarious purposes.

Their own nature is as mysterious to the shades themselves as it is to others. Many spend their lives in search of answers, both about why they are what they are now, and who they were before they died.

A Soulless Existence

One of the few things that scholars have managed to establish about them is that shades don't have souls. Their soulless nature means that all shades share a common feeling: an emptiness, a lack of something that they cannot remember. Shades are not necessarily good or evil, but often this emptiness is what drives them. Some shades perceive this emptiness as a deep hunger, and try to sate it by killing and destroying, others perceive it as a lack and try to fill it with respect, accomplishments or affection.

Shade Traits

Your shade has the following traits.

Ability Score Increase. Increase one ability score by 2 and increase a different one by 1, or increase three different ability scores by 1.

Creature Type. You are an undead.

Size. Your size is Small or Medium.

Speed. Your walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Incorporeal Form. As a bonus action you can become incorporeal, along with any objects you are wearing or carrying. While you are incorporeal you can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. You remain in this state until the end of your current turn. If you are inside an object or creature when you return corporeal, you are shunted to the last unoccupied space you occupied, and you take 1d10 force damage. Starting at 5th level, you remain incorporeal until the end of your next turn instead of until the end of the current one whenever you use this feature, if you end your turn inside an object while incorporeal, you take 1d10 force damage.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, after which you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

Shadow Stealth. You have advantage on Dexterity (stealth) checks you make while in dim light and darkness.

Sunlight Sensitivity. You have disadvantage on Wisdom (perception) checks you make while in sunlight.

Undead Nature. You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe. You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 8 hours if you spend 6 of those hours in an inactive, motionless state, during which you retain consciousness. However unlike other undead creatures, you can be healed by healing magic.

Racial Feat: True Spirit

Prerequisite: Shade

Whenever you use your Incorporeal Form feature, you gain the following benefits:

  • You gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed while incorporeal.
  • You gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage while incorporeal.
