Goon Moon
by Paolo Davolio // Echidna Design
Goon moons are aberrations closely related to goon baloons (see Monstrous Compendium Vol 1: Spelljammer Creatures) of which they are a way more powerful version. The two types of creature have a bizarre and innocent appearance in common but also a forceful cruel nature. At first sight a goon moon looks like a yellow asteroid with a diameter between 20 and 40 feet, with a number of dark craters on its surface. To a close look, appear obvious how the craters are in fact big threatening black eyes, from which the moon emits dangerous iridiscent rays capable of annihilating the mind of whoever gets hit by them.
Usually this aberration is found in skies, in the wildspace or Astral Sea in which it looks for ships to destroy, but when
these targets are not available the goon moon can settle for groundling creatures. When possible the moon strolls around belts of asteroids with an erratic behaviour to then crash against unaware ships, shatter the crew minds with its rays, intoxicate them with lethal and nauseating gas coming from its inside and at the end celebrate their defeat. During combat they rely massively on their mobility and they can fly at high speed thanks to the propulsion of the putrescent gas that they can develop in their insides.
Goon baloons behave towards goon moons as mothers or homes. When they can, the baloons attempt to draw ships to them to rejoice of the sufferance experienced by the victims.
Based on their yellowish color, their craters and awful smell, the most experienced captains call this creature cheese moon (or worse), this nickname gets the creature insanely mad.

Gas Trail. When the goon moon moves, it can leave a cloud of poisonous gas on its trail. The cloud is as wide as the goon moon's space and covers the whole are of the goon moon's movement. Goon baloons and goon moons are immune to this poison. Another creature that begins its turn in the cloud or enters into it for the first time in a turn must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw, taking 5 (1d10) poison damage on a failure. The cloud dissipated at the beginning of the goon moon's next turn.
Legendary Resistance (3/day). If the goon moon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Massive Burst. The goon moon bursts when it drops to 0 hit points, releasing its poisonous gas in a 30-foot-radius sphere centered on itself. Creatures in that area must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or take 22 (4d10) poison damage and be poisoned for 1 minute. A poisoned creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Siege Monster. The goon moon deals double damage to objects and structures.
Unusual Nature. The goon moon doesn’t require air, food, or drink.
Actions
Multiattack. The goon moon makes three Scintillating Eyes attacks.
Scintillating Eye. Magical, kaleidoscopic light emanates from one of the goon moon’s eyes as the goon moon targets one creature it can see within 240 feet of itself. The target must make a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw, taking 26 (4d12) psychic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Moon Landing (Recharge 5-6). The goon moon moves up to its speed and lands on top of every creature and object that can fit under its space (up to a 40-foot-square). Every target makes a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw.
On a failure, a target takes 52 (8d12) bludgeoning damage. Additionally, if the target was standing on a solid surface, it's crushed by the goon moon's body and therefore it's restrained until the goon moon moves away (escape DC 18). While restrained, the target is blinded, prone and can't breathe.
On a success, the target can use its reaction to reach the first free space out of the affected area, otherwise it takes 26 (4d12) damage and becomes prone.Legendary Actions
The monster can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The monster regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Poisonous Exale (Costs 2 Actions). The goon moon releases a cloud of poison in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on itself. Goon baloons and goon moons are immune to this poison. Every other creature that begins its turn there or enters the area for the first time in a turn makes a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, a target takes 22 (4d10) poison damage and becomes poisoned until the end of the target's next turn. The cloud dissipates at the end of the goon moon's next turn.
Scintillating Eye. The goon moon makes one Scintillating Eye attack.
Trample Roll (Costs 2 Actions). The goon moon moves up to its speed. As a Gargantuan creature, it can move through the area of Large or smaller creatures. Such a creature makes a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 11 (2d10) bludgeoning damage on a failure. The goon moon can leave a Gas Trail behind, as usual.
