Way of the Blademaster

In order to wield the blade, you must be the blade. You are the weapon, and it is you. It is an extension of your body, a lost limb that you've finally regrown. Only once you start thinking like this will you become a blademaster.

A Monastic Tradition

Monks that practice this tradition are true masters of the blade. They spend years training to become true warriors and eventually even learn to teleport themselves across the battlefield to reach their foes.

Disciple of the Sword

When you choose this subclass at 3rd level, you gain the following beneits:

  • Student of the Blade. You become proficient with longswords, rapiers and scimitars. When you reach 11th level in this class, you also gain proficiency with greatswords. All weapons you gain proficiency with this way count as monk weapons for you
  • Swordsmith. You gain proficiency in Smith's Tools, and you have advantage on ability checks you make that use or involve swords.
  • Vigilant Defence. As long as you are holding a sword, you gain a bonus of +1 to your AC.

Unerring Attacks

Also at 3rd level, your precision is greatly increased. Whenever you make an attack roll with a sword or an unarmed strike and miss, you can choose to add your Wisdom modifier to the roll, potentially causing the attack to hit. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, after which you must complete a long rest in order to use this feature again unless you spend 1 ki point to do so.

Distant Strikes

Starting at 6th level, weapon attacks you make with swords count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.

Additionally, once on each of your turns when you would make a weapon attack with a sword, you can teleport up to 120 feet to an unoccupied space you can see before making that attack. Once you've used this feature, you cannot use it again unless you spend 2 ki points to do so.

Parrying Technique

At 11th level, you can deflect attacks with your sword. When a creature you can see hits you or a creature within 5 feet of you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to reduce the damage the target takes by 1d10 + your Dexterity modifier + half your monk level. You must be wielding a sword to use this reaction.

If the damage is reduced to 0, you can spend 1 ki point to make a weapon attack with your sword against the attacker as part of the same reaction, regardless of the range between you and the attacker.

Icon of the Blade

Starting at 17th level, your are truly a blademaster. You gain the following benefits:

  • Deadly Presence. You add your Wisdom modifier to Charisma (intimidation) checks you make when wielding a sword.
  • Sword Mastery. Whenever you hit a creature with a weapon attack using a sword, the attack deals extra damage equal to your Wisdom modifier.
  • Thousand Cuts Technique. As long as you are wielding a sword, you can cast the steel wind strike spell once without expending a spell slot. Once you've done so, you cannot do so again until you finish a long rest unless you spend 5 ki points to do so. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability modifier for this spell.
