Way of the Vagabond

Every monastery comes from a lineage of lessons and philosophy. But those who follow the Way of the Vagabond are individualistic and train under their own lessons. Their teachers are the experiences they gain from wandering the globe. Their martial prowess matches well with their wisdom.

Monk Level Feature
3rd Swordman's Craft, Saint's Companions
6th Deflect Strikes
11th Extra Attack (2)
17th Two Heavens as One

Swordman's Craft

At 3rd level, you gain proficiency with carpenter’s tools and martial weapons. If you are already proficient with carpenter’s tools, you gain proficiency with another set of artisan's tools of your choice.

In addition, as part of a short or long rest, you can use carpenter’s tools to create two wooden swords. You are proficient with them, and they have the light or versatile property (your choice upon creation). On hit, it deals slashing damage equal to 1d4 (1d6) + your Strength modifier.

Saint's Companions

At 3rd level, you gain the following benefits:

  • Dual Wielding. When you take the Attack action while two-weapon fighting, you can make an additional attack with your off-hand weapon as part of your action instead of your bonus action, adding your ability modifier to the damage of this attack.
  • Flurry of Blades. When you use Flurry of Blows or a bonus action to make additional attacks after using the Attack action and make an unarmed strike, you can make light melee weapon attacks instead of unarmed strikes.

Deflect Strikes

At 6th level, as a reaction, when you are hit by a melee weapon attack, you can expend 1 Ki Point and reduce the damage by an amount equal to 1d12 + your monk level + your Dexterity modifier.

As part of the same reaction, if you reduce the damage of the triggering attack to 0, you can make an unarmed strike or a single monk weapon attack against the attacker if it is within range.

Extra Attack (2)

At 11th level, you can attack three times, instead of twice, when you take the Attack action on your turn.

Two Heavens as One

At 17th level, your mastery over your weapons and self have made you the pinnacle of fighters. If you miss with an attack roll, you can roll it again with advantage.

Once you use this feature, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest or expend 2 Ki Points to use it again.

Notes

This sublcass was initially inspired by the Monk: Way of the Two Heavens by u/king-starman

  • 5.30.22: Version 1

-- Saint's Companion (while it's basically granting you a free sword, it is made of wood, and while not written, maybe it'll only last for one or two combat encounters, or burns easily, maybe. Will watch for feedback)

-- Saint's Companion (utilized the Dual Wielding fighting style from u/laserllama's Alternate Fighter)

-- Two Heavens as One (while many focus on a high damaging feature, I decided to try and think of ways focusing the two-weapon fighting, I decided to give it the Swashbuckler rogue's Master Duelist feature given the amount of attacks this monk would be able to do)
