Primal Path

Path of the Hunter

Studying tracks left in the dirt, smelling the subtle scent in the air, mercilessly pursuing their exhausted prey. Barbarians who walk this path enjoy the thrill of the hunt, utilise their companions’ tracking abilities to trail and eliminate their quarry.

Hunter’s Companion

3rd-level Path of the Hunter feature

When you adopt this primal path, choose a beast to act as your companion. Your companion takes the appearance of your chosen beast, but uses the Hunter’s Companion stat block. As an action, you can summon your companion in an unoccupied space that you can see within 30 feet of you. The Hunter’s Companion is friendly to you and your allies.

In combat, the Hunter's Companion shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, your companion can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

Once you summon the Hunter’s Companion, you can’t do so again until you finish a long or short rest. Your companion also regains all of its hit points upon completing a long or short rest. The Hunter’s Companion remains by your side until; it is reduced to 0 hit points, until you use this feature to summon your companion again, or until you die. If any of these events occur, it vanishes leaving anything it was wearing or carrying behind.

Heavy Draw

3rd-level Path of the Hunter feature

You have a preference for range weaponry which carry a heavy draw. You can use your Strength modifier in place of your Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls made using ranged weapons.

Additionally, any barbarian features which are normally restricted to melee weapon attacks are now compatible with ranged weapon attacks. Strength restrictions still apply.

Sic ‘em

6th-level Path of the Hunter feature

The hunt is on. The Hunter’s Companion gains the following benefits:

Silver Toothed. Its attacks count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.

Shared Fury. When the Hunter’s Companion makes a Bite attack while you are raging, it can add your Rage Damage bonus to the damage roll.

Pursuer. When you hit a creature with an attack during your turn, the Hunter's Companion can use its reaction to move up to its speed towards the creature you hit.

Keen Nose

10th-level Path of the Hunter feature

The Hunter's Companion is capable of tracking down hidden foes. Using its reaction, which it takes upon hearing a command word from you (no action required), your companion can make a Wisdom (Perception) check with advantage. Any hidden or invisible creatures within 60ft of the beast must make a contested Dexterity (Stealth) check. If your companion succeeds the contest against a creature, you and your companion learn of the creature’s current location.

Additionally, if the Hunter's Companion manages to hit an invisible creature with an attack, they are revealed until the end of your companion’s next turn. Revealed creatures cannot benefit from being invisible.

Apex Predator

14th-level Path of the Hunter feature

Through your training the Hunter’s Companion has become an apex predator, gaining the following benefits:

  • When you summon the Hunter’s Companion you can choose to make it medium or large.

  • The Hunter's Companion gains a climbing speed equal to its walking speed.

  • When your companion hits a creature with an opportunity attack, the creature’s speed becomes 0 for the rest of the turn.
