Barbarian: Path of the Gladiator

A gladiator is an arena fighter who fights to entertain the spectators. They specialize in putting on a show while fighting to the death. The more brutal the battle, the better. Fight for your freedom in the Colusseum, or perhaps just fight to become famous. Choose your gladiatorial origin on the last page.

Favourite of the Crowd

At 3rd level, you gain the ability use a myriad of battle shouts to bolster you in combat. Learn two shouts at 3rd level, and an additional one at 10th level and 14th level. Using a shout on your turn counts as an attack for the purposes of extending your rage duration. You cannot use shouts while silenced.

  • Mars Favours Me!: As a bonus action, declare victory to nearby enemies and clash your blades together. Your attack rolls critically hit on 19 or 20 until the end of your turn.
  • Victory or Death!: As an action, roar violently and cause enemies within 5ft of you that can hear you to pass a Wisdom save DC 8 + PROF + STR, or be frightened of you until your next turn.
  • Blood and Sand!: As a reaction, taunt an enemy that misses an attack against you. Your next attack against this enemy gains 2d6 + PROF bonus damage.
  • Fight Me!: As an action, let out a cry of war that goads enemies to attack you. A number of creatures of your choice that you can see and can hear you equal to your Strength modifier must make a Wisdom save DC 8 + PROF + STR, on a fail they have disadvantage on attack rolls that do not target you until the start of your next turn.
  • All Eyes On Me!: As an action while you are raging, you gain a number of temporary hit points equal to 5x the number of non hostile humanoids that can see you, to a maximum of 30 THP.
  • The Crowd Loves Me!: As a bonus action, make a performance check. You may add your rage bonus to this check. Your movement speed is increased by the number you rolled for your performance check (rounded up to increments of 5) until the end of your rage. You have advantage on this check if one or more non hostile humanoid can see you. This effect cannot stack.
  • Am I Not Merciful!: When you incapacitate a creature with a non lethal attack you can use this shout as a reaction, you gain a number of temporary hit points equal to the damage you dealt with the finishing blow.

When you deal a killing blow to a creature with a CR of 1 or higher, roll a d6. On a 5 or 6, you regain 1 shout use.

The number of shouts you can use is equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain your shouts after a short rest.


Crowd Pleaser

The crowd is the most important thing to a gladiator. Starting at 3rd level, you can use Strength in place of Charisma for intimidation, persuasion, and performance skill checks.


Champion of the Arena

Gladiators are only as valuable as their performances in the arena, lest they are sold or killed. At 6th level, gain proficiency in Performance. If you are already proficient, gain expertise. In addition, when a non hostile humanoid can see you, you are immune to the frightened condition.


Gladiator Training

Recall your rigorous training at the barracks. At 10th level, you train in a certain fighting styles that becomes synonymous with your gladiator identity. Choose a style from the list. When you gain a level in this class, you can replace your training with another style.

  • Dimachaerus: You learn the two-weapon fighting style. In addition, while wielding two weapons, you gain a +1 bonus to your AC.
  • Retiarius: When you wield a trident or a net, it has the light property. In addition, when you throw a net, it does not have disadvantage at close or at long range. A creature that attempts to escape a net that you have thrown must make a DC 8 + PROF + STR Strength check to escape. Your net has an AC equal to 10 + your proficiency bonus, and HP equal to your constitution score.
  • Parmularius: When you are wielding a shield, you can use a bonus action to shield bash a creature. This deals 1d4 + STR bludgeoning damage. On a critical hit, the creature must succeed on a DC + PROF + STR Constitution saving throw or be knocked prone.
  • Andabata: You gain blindsight up to 30 ft., in addition, you cannot be surprised. You use your strength modifier instead of your dexterity modifier for initiative checks.
  • Cestus: You learn the unarmed fighting style, and your unarmed strikes count as magical for the purposes of overcoming resistance to non magical attacks. In addition, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action if you made an unarmed attack on your turn.
  • Scutarius: You learn the defense fighting style, which is active when you are wielding a shield. In addition, you can use a shove attack as a bonus action.
  • Sagittarius: You can use your Strength modifier in place of your Dexterity modifier when making attacks with bows. In addition, you can add your rage bonus to attacks made with bows.

Fortune Favours the Bold

Gladiators are well known for their resilience. At 14th level, when you are reduced to half your maximum hp, hit while below half your maximum hp, or struck by a critical hit by an enemy within 5 ft. of you, you can use your reaction to attack the target. In addition, the difficulty check for your relentless rage is reduced by 1 for every non hostile humanoid that can see you, to a maximum of 10.
