Primal Path: Path of the Tempest

by u/Silverblade1234 (updated 12/1/2021)

Most barbarians revel in the violent thrill of melee combat; others prefer to hurl death and destruction upon their enemies from afar. Barbarians that follow the Path of the Tempest harness the power of the storm to become deadly ranged combatants. Their javelins and handaxes rain down upon their foes like deadly hail, while they move across the battlefield like a cyclone.

Harness the Storm

3rd-level Path of the Tempest feature

You are as deadly with thrown weapons as other barbarians are with great weapons. Your ranged attacks with thrown weapons are considered melee weapon attacks for the purposes of your barbarian class features. In addition, your thrown weapons return to your hand immediately after being used to make a ranged attack. Finally, when you enter a rage, you can choose to harness the power of one of the following types of storms while raging:

  • Hailstorm. You double the short and long range of your thrown weapons. In addition, once on each of your turns when you make a ranged attack with a thrown weapon, you can make an additional ranged attack with that thrown weapon as part of the same action. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of this extra attack, unless that modifier is negative.
  • Thunderstorm. Melee weapons you wield gain the thrown property, with a short range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet. In addition, when you make a successful attack with a melee weapon, you can push your target 5 feet away from you.

Ride the Wind

6th-level Path of the Tempest feature

The wind buoys your leaps and bounds. Your jumping distance is doubled. You also no longer halve your jumping distance when making a standing jump. Finally, you have resistance to falling damage, even while not raging.

Making The Storm Your Own

It's left deliberately vague whether the source of the Path of the Tempest's power is magic or skill. One Tempest might summon gusts of wind to propel their thrown weapons around the battlefield, while another might expertly aim ricochet attacks. Feel free to make the Path of the Tempest your own!

Hurricane Throw

10th-level Path of the Tempest feature

You can throw weapons with tremendous force, creating mighty gusts that launch you across the battlefield. Once on each of your turns when you make a ranged attack with a thrown weapon, you can create a burst of wind that moves you up to 15 feet towards or away from your target. You can choose to be moved before or after you make the attack.

Thunderbolt Strike

14th-level Path of the Tempest feature

Once on your turn when you make a ranged attack with a thrown weapon, you can empower your attack to cleave through enemies. Each creature in the 5-foot wide line between you and your target must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes damage as if it were hit by the weapon, plus additional damage equal to your barbarian level. In addition, the creature is pushed 5 feet away from the line and knocked prone. On a successful save, a target takes half as much damage and suffers no additional effects. If the original attack hits, it also deals additional damage equal to your barbarian level.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
