School of Pictomancy

Wizards from the school of Pictomancy see magic not as a science to be studied, but as an art form. To express this, they use the power of images, literally painting their magic into life.

Subclass Features

Tools of the Trade

When you take this school at 2nd level, you gain proficiency in Painter’s Supplies if you are not already proficient in it. In addition, you are able to use them as a magical focus.

Drawn to Life

Also when you take this school at 2nd level, as part of a short or long rest, you may paint an image of a creature you have seen with a maximum CR equal to half your wizard level, rounded up. As an action, you may invoke the magic woven into the image to make the creature leap off the canvas, using that creature’s stat block. This creature is under your control, follows your commands, and acts immediately after your turn. When the creature is reduced to 0 HP, it vanishes, leaving you with a blank canvas. Killing a painted creature awards no experience.

You may have a number of creature paintings whose total CR is equal to your wizard level. For instance, at 10th level, you may have five CR 2 paintings, two CR 5 paintings, ten CR 1 paintings, etc. In addition, you may also carry up to five paintings of creatures with a CR of 0.

Finally, you may use an action to dismiss a painted creature within five feet of you, returning it to the canvas. This effect does not work if the total CR of your paintings exceeds your maximum.

War Paint

Your magic has improved enough that your painted creatures become more resilient. Starting at 6th level, you may add your Intelligence modifier to your painted creatures’ AC. In addition, your painted creatures’ bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing attacks count as magical for the purposes of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.

Salvage Pigment

You can now use the magic woven into your painted creatures to bolster yourself. Beginning at 10th level, you may use an action to instantly dismiss an active painted creature within thirty feet of you and gain one of the two following benefits.

  • You gain temporary hit points equal to the painted creature’s CR (minimum of 1). You gain no temporary hit points if the creature has a CR of 0.
  • You recover spell slots similarly to your Arcane Recovery feature. The total level of spell slots can be no greater than the CR of the destroyed creature, divided by two (minimum of 1). Creatures with a CR of 0 recover no spell slots.

Creatures dismissed using this feature are not returned to their canvas.

Masterpiece

At 14th level, your artistic talents reach their apex. You may designate one of your paintings as your masterpiece. Your masterpiece gains the following benefits.

  • When summoned, the painted creature gains temporary hit points equal to your wizard level.
  • When killed or salvaged, your masterpiece returns to its canvas rather than being destroyed.
  • When salvaged, your masterpiece grants twice as many temporary hit points, or doubles the total amount of spell slots recovered. Recovered spell slots cannot exceed 6th level.

You may only have one masterpiece at a time. If you wish to make a new masterpiece, you must perform a ten-minute ritual during a short or long rest with a new image to make your masterpiece. Your previous masterpiece then becomes a regular magic painting.
