Elemental Arrow

Weapon (arrow), rare

This magical arrow is imbued with elemental power. If it hits a target, an arrow inflicts special damage unique to its type instead of the weapon’s normal damage. Once an elemental arrow deals damage to at least one creature, it becomes a nonmagical arrow. Five types of these arrows exist:

  • Acid Arrow. On a hit, the target takes 5d4 acid damage immediately and 3d4 acid damage at the end of its next turn. On a miss, the arrow splashes the target with acid for half as much of the initial damage and no damage at the end of its next turn.
  • Cold Arrow. On a hit, the target takes 4d8 cold damage, and is covered in ice for 1 minute or until a creature uses its action to break the ice off itself or another creature. A creature covered in ice has its speed reduced to 0.
  • Fire Arrow. On a hit, the target takes 8d6 fire damage. A flammable object hit by this arrow ignites if it isn’t being worn or carried.
  • Lightning Arrow. On a hit, the target takes 4d8 lightning damage. All other creatures within 10 feet of the hit target must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 2d8 lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
  • Thunder Arrow. On a hit, the target takes 4d8 thunder damage, while the impact emits a thunderous boom audible out to 300 feet. In addition, if the target is a creature, it must succeed on a Strength saving throw (save DC 15) or be pushed 10 feet away from you and knocked prone.

Other types of magic ammunition of this kind exist, such as elemental bolts meant for a crossbow, though arrows are most common.
