The Devout Knight

Devout Knight

A martial archetype inspired by the concept of the knights Templar and the medieval Crusaders. Different from paladins, who swear an Oath to serve an ideal, these fighters are the strong arms of their faith, behaving somewhat like fanatical soldiers who follow their god's tenets down on the battlefield.

Religious Education

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, choose one domain related to your deity from those available to the cleric. As part of your training as a devout knight, you gain proficiency in Religion and one artisan's tool of your choice related to that domain.

Spellcasting

When you reach 3rd level, you gain the ability to augment your martial prowess with spells fueled by your faith.

Cantrips. You learn two cantrips of your choice from the cleric spell list. You learn an additional cleric cantrip of your choice at 10th level.

Spell Slots. The Devout Knight Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your cleric spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

For example, if you know the 1st-level spell cure wounds and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast cure wounds using either slot.

Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher. You know three 1st-level spells of your choice which you must choose from the cleric spell list or from the list of spells of the domain you chose. Domain spells are cleric spells for you.

The Spells Known column of the Devout Knight Spellcasting table shows when you learn more cleric or domain spells of 1st level or higher. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 7th level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level.

Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the cleric or domain spells you know with another spell of your choice from the cleric or domain spell lists. The new spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots.

Spellcasting Ability. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your cleric spells, since you learn your spells through prayer and devotion. You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a cleric spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Harangue

Beginning at 7th level, the expression of your religious fervor can motivate your allies and spur them to greater deeds. As a bonus action on your turn, you may give 10 temporary hp to a number of allies within 30 ft of you equal to your proficiency bonus. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again.

Will of the Faithful

When you reach 7th level, the strength of your faith provides unshakable clarity and purpose to your actions. You gain proficiency in Wisdom saving throws. If you already have this proficiency, you instead gain proficiency in Charisma saving throws.

Steadfast

At 10th level, your unwavering devotion helps you retain your focus in the face of adversity. You may add your Wisdom modifier on Constitution saving throws made to maintain your concentration on a spell when you take damage.

Divine Presence

Starting at 15th level, you can feel the permanent presence of your deity at your side. When you roll initiative and have no spell slot remaining, you regain one spell slot of the level of your choice.

Blessed Warrior

At 18th level, you aim is as true as your faith. When you fail on an attack roll, you may use your reaction to succeed instead. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a short or long rest.

(Alternative: Simply add your Wisdom modifier to your attack roll, once per turn, no limit.)
