Chiropterans

"They fly, they live in the dark, they'll eat just about anything, and they weird me out"
"Shhhh... They'll hear you."

—Unnamed Pinnacle Miners.

History

Chiropteran history is mostly kept through pictorial paintings. Before the Collapse they were a largely stand-offish people who traded infrequently with other races. As the world shrank around them, they traveled to Pinnacle, and like many races, were brought in as a work force uniquely suited to the large subterranean caverns. Many still have an air of xenophobia, but more and more they are finding kinship with the other lower class races of their new home.

Appearance

Chiropterans generally stand between 4 and 5 feet tall. Their faces have large eyes and noses, with a relatively small mouth filled with pointed teeth. Large ears seem to twitch about constantly. Their legs are undersized, making normal walking difficult and slow, but their front arms are elongated, with patagia stretching between long fingers, granting them the ability to fly.

Chiropteran Names

The high-pitched whistles and chirps that make up the chiropteran language are difficult for other species to emulate, so frequently Chiropterans adopt a nickname similar to the sounds of their real name.

Male Names: Skreek, Three-oh, Shrirp

Female Names: Shir-rup, Shree-Shree, Trilly

Chiropteran Traits

Your Chiropteran character has the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase. Choose +2 to one stat, and +1 to another

Age. Chiropterans reach maturity a little faster than humans at 16, and live to be nearly a century old.

Alignment. Chiropterans live in tightly-packed communities. Because of this they tend to favor good, but with a loose social system lean more towards neutral, or chaotic alignments.

Size. Small, or Medium, chosen at character creation.

Speed. Walking speed of 25 feet, regardless of size.

Languages. Undercommon and one other.

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 90 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Magic Sight. Your keen senses can focus to see the presence of magic. You gain the ability to cast the detect magic spell, but only as a ritual. Your spellcasting ability for this spell is your choice of Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma. You can also cast this spell normally with any spell slots you have.

Nimble Flight. Thanks to your wings, you have a flying of 30 as long as you are not wielding a two-handed or heavy weapon. Any increase to walking speed increases your flight speed. When you fall, you can use your reaction to make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 10) to stop falling and fly in place until the start of your next turn.

Excellent Ears. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
