A hand crossbow designed to be collapsible, unfoldable, and disguised such that it is harder to identify it as a weapon. The cost of this, however, is the ability to easily load the weapon. With preservative properties to poisons, and hard-to-detect design, it makes a popular choice for assassins.

Range

A weapon that can be used to make a ranged attack has a range shown in parentheses after the ammunition or thrown property. The range lists two numbers. The first is the weapon's normal range in feet, and the second indicates the weapon's maximum range. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. You can't attack a target beyond the weapon's long range.

Ammunition

You can use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a ranged attack only if you have ammunition to fire from the weapon. Each time you attack with the weapon, you expend one piece of ammunition. Drawing the ammunition from a quiver, case, or other container is part of the attack. Loading a one-handed weapon requires a free hand. At the end of the battle, you can recover half your expended ammunition by taking a minute to search the battlefield.

If you use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a melee attack, you treat the weapon as an improvised weapon. A sling must be loaded to deal any damage when used in this way.

Light

A light weapon is small and easy to handle, making it ideal for use when fighting with two weapons.

Loading

Because of the time required to load this weapon, you can fire only one piece of ammunition from it when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to fire it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make.

Collapsible

This item appears to be a simple small object, but its innards have been replaced by the mechanics of a crossbow. It may appear to be a rosary box, a box of herbs, or any other common square-based prism object. As a bonus action, someone who knows what this object truly is can open the weapon up with one hand so that it can be used. As an action, the object can be closed, returning to its hidden form. The weapon cannot be fired when closed. Should a creature attempt to identify this object as a weapon when closed, they must succeed a DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) check, whereupon a success they learn how to operate the item's opening and closing mechanism.

Closed System

This crossbows design prevents it from being reloaded without some disassembly. A period of 10 minutes, potentially over a short or long rest, must be taken to disassemble, add a crossbow bolt, and then reassemble the weapon. Otherwise, this weapon cannot be reloaded.

Ergonomic Design

This weapon is designed so that it can be held with 1 or 2 hands. When held with 2 hands, it's damage die increases (see weapon damage stat). Additionally, should someone not have proficiency with this weapon, they can add their proficiency bonus to attack rolls with this weapon as long as they are proficient with simple weapons, and hold this weapon with 2 hands when attacking. Additionally, when held with 2 hands, this weapons long range increases by 30 feet.

Preservation

Should a piece of ammunition have an effect applied to it with a duration, such as a poison effect that dries in 1 minute, its duration is paused while inside this weapon, and resumes upon firing. Should the ammo have any passive effect on its wielder (The creature shooting the ammo), this effect is nulled while inside this weapon.
