Gáe Bulg, Spear of Cúchulainn

Spear, legendary (requires attunement)

The mythic Spear of Mortal Death is rumoured to be carved from a single bone of a mighty sea monster that terrorized the oceans in the distant past. The spear and the method to use it was traditionally passed down from teacher to student, but at some point, it was lost to time.

  • Powerful weapon. While wielding this magical spear you gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls. When you attack a creature with this weapon, you score a critical hit on a 19 or 20, and that creature takes an additional 1d10 piercing damage.

  • Frenzy. As a bonus action you can mark a creature as your enemy, each successful attack made against that creature with Gáe Bulg until the end of your turn is a critical hit. If an attack made with Gáe Bulg during this barrage reduces the marked creature to 50 hit points or less, barbs extend from the spear within the creature, shredding it internally and killing it instantly. Once you use this feature, you may not use it again until you complete a long rest.

  • Standing in death. If you drop to zero hit points, but won't die outright You can instead continue fighting while rolling death saving throws at the beginning of each of Your turns and You need to fail four saves instead of three to die. After You succeed in the saves You can choose to stay conscious, but you will take three levels of exhaustion and gain one hit point.

  • Weapon's true name. As an action You can speak the weapon's name and throw it. The attack is an automatic hit unless the target is shielded by magical means such as a wall of force spell or is out of range. The creature hit must make either DC 18 Dexterity or DC 18 Constitution save or receive 6d10+20 force damage and half as much on a successful save. You must finish a long rest to use this ability again.

  • Bounded by fate. As a bonus action You can call upon the spear and it will travel to Your hand. It can be stopped by magical barriers or at least 10 meters of stone, or 2 meters of steel. If a creature is in the way You can choose to attack it. You always know exactly where the weapon is as long as it is on the same plane of existence.

  • Shared Knowledge. While attuned to this item, you have proficiency in rune crafting and You can use the following runes 3 times before you need to finish a long rest.

Ignite. As an action, you scribe the ild rune using ash onto a flammable object. That object immediately bursts into flame. While it burns, the fire extends 5 feet out from the rune you scribed.

Fire Tamer. As an action, you touch an open flame and scribe the ild rune within it with a hand motion. This causes the flame to immediately extinguish. For a large blaze, the fire is extinguished in a 20-foot radius.

Indomitable Stand. As a reaction, You project the stein rune onto the ground at your feet. Until you move, you have an advantage on all ability checks and saving throws to resist effects that would force you to move.

Wind’s Grasp. As a reaction when you fall, you can scribe vind rune in the air around you to take no damage from the fall.

Frigid Touch. As an action, you scribe the kalt rune on the surface of any volume of water. The water freezes in a 10-foot radius around the spot where you scribed the rune.

Attunement

Anyone who attempts to attune to the Spear must make a DC 18 Constitution save or suffer 8d10 piercing damage as the thorns from the spear extend to the creature's limb. If the creature fails the save by 5 or more, it will lose the function of that limb permanently. Grater restoration or similar magic can return the appendage to its working state.
