Martial Archetype: Fencer

While some may associate fencing with the roguish swashbuckler's flamboyant antics, a true fencer is precise and technical, never wasting any movement. You have poured your life into the artistry of the blade, handily cutting down opponents with superior skill and cunning.

Bonus Proficiencies

At 3rd level, you gain proficiency in the Acrobatics and Deception skills.

Fencing Stance

At 3rd level, you effortlessly shift into a masterful stance, perfect for swift strikes, parries and feints. While you are wielding a finesse weapon in one hand and nothing in the other hand, and you are not wearing heavy armor, you are considered to be in your fencing stance, and you gain the following benefits:

  • You have a +1 bonus to melee weapon attack rolls and a +1 bonus to your Armor Class.
  • Unburdened by heavy equipment, you are light on your feet. Your walking speed increases by 5 feet.
  • You can feint to gain an opening, using your bonus action to make a Charisma (Deception) check contested by an adjacent creature's Wisdom (Insight) check. You can add your Intelligence modifier to the result of the roll. If you succeed, you have advantage on the next melee weapon attack you make against that creature.

Defensive Maneuvers

At 7th level, you become more adept at responding to your opponent's moves. While in your fencing stance, you gain the following uses for your reaction:

  • Backstep. When a creature ends its movement adjacent to you, you can use your reaction to quickly step 5 feet away from it, without provoking attacks of opportunity.
  • Parry Riposte. When a creature makes a melee weapon attack against you, you can use your reaction to increase your AC by 2 against the triggering attack. If the triggering attack misses, you can then immediately make a melee weapon attack against that creature.

You can use these reactions a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a short or long rest.

Lunge

At 10th level, while in your fencing stance, your reach increases by 5 feet.

Exacting Strike

At 15th level, you can spot and exploit an opponent's weak points with incredible precision. Once per round while in your fencing stance, you can add your Intelligence modifier to the attack and damage rolls of a melee weapon attack.

Coup de Grâce

At 18th level, while in your fencing stance, your melee weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 against any creature that has no more than half its maximum hit points, and you can add an additional weapon damage die when determining the extra damage for a critical hit.
