Alliegiance Abilities - Bretonnia
This section describes the allegiance abilities available to a Bretonnia army, including battle traits for the army, command traits for its general and the artefacts of power available to its heroes.
Battle Traits
Blessing of the Lady
Friendly NOBILITY units have a ward save of 5+. If a NOBILITY unit retreats from combat or fails a battleshock test, they cannot benefit from this trait for the rest of the game.
Lance Formation
If exactly 3 models from a friendly BRETONNIA unit are within 1" of any enemy models, every model in that unit can attack with its Lance weapon, regardless of that weapon's range.
Peasant's Duty
Increase the Bravery characteristic of any friendly PEASANTRY unit by 2 if there is a friendly NOBILITY model within 6" of that unit.
Virtues of the Chivalric Knight
A Bretonnian army always starts each battle with a prayer, asking the Lady for guidance. This guidance often takes the form of one of the Knightly Virtues, which they will then strive to embody in the coming conflict.
At the start of your first hero phase, you can pick one of the following virtues to be emulated by your forces in this battle:
- Confidence: Add 1 to hit rolls for friendly NOBILITY models Lance weapons if they made a charge move in the same turn.
- Stoicism: Friendly NOBILITY units can re-roll failed battleshock tests.
- Empathy: Friendly PEASANTRY models gain the benefit of the Blessing of the Lady battle trait as though they had the NOBILITY keyword.
- Purity: Friendly BRETONNIA WIZARDS add 1 to unbinding and dispelling rolls.
- Heroism: If the unmodified hit roll for an attack made by a friendly NOBILITY model is 6 and the target is a HERO or MONSTER, that attack inflicts 1 mortal wound on the target in addition to any normal damage.
Command Ability
Inspired Virtues: Visions of a past hero dance in a noble's mind, guiding him toward honorable victory.
You can use this command ability at the start of your hero phase if your general is on the battlefield. You lose the benefits of your current virtue and choose a new one as though it was the first hero phase.
Command Traits
A BRETONNIAN LORD or NOBLE general of an army with a Bretonnia allegiance can choose one of the following Command Traits:
-
Horsemaster:
Add 1 to hit rolls for Hooves attacks made by friendly BRETONNIA units wholly within 18" of this general.
-
Zealous Quest:
When this general is reduced to 0 wounds, roll a die. On a 2+, he is instead reduced to 1 wound and any further wounds suffered are negated.
-
Noble Disdain:
Subtract 1 from hit rolls of missile weapons that target this general.
-
Dragonbane:
This general can re-roll failed hit rolls if the target is a MONSTER.
-
Champion of the Lady:
This general adds 1 to rolls for the Blessing of the Lady battle trait.
-
Unparalleled Virtue:
Once per game, at the end of your hero phase, you may choose a Virtue from the Virtues of the Chivalric Knight battle trait. You gain the benefits of this virtue until your next hero phase, in addition to your currently active one. The same virtue does not stack multiple times.
Artefacts of Power
Heirlooms of Bretonnia
-
Heartwood Lance:
Pick 1 of the bearer's melee weapons. Improve the damage characteristic of that weapon by 1. In addition, the bearer can re-roll failed wound rolls if it made a charge move in the same turn.
-
Prayer Icon of Quenelles:
If the bearer is a WIZARD, they can attempt to cast an additional spell in each hero phase. If they are not a WIZARD, they know 1 spell from the Lore of the Lady and can attempt to cast it in their hero phase.
-
Twilight Banner:
Once per battle, at the start of the movement phase, the bearer can activate this banner. Until the end of your turn, all friendly units wholly within 12" of the bearer can pass across terrain features as if they were not there when they make any type of move. Any vertical distance up and/or down is ignored when measuring these movevements.
-
Banner of the Lady:
Enemy units within 6" of the bearer must re-roll successful battleshock tests.
-
Silver Mirror:
Once per battle, instead of rolling to unbind a spell, you can use this mirror if the bearer is within 18" of the caster. The spell is automatically unbound, and you can roll a die. On a 1, nothing further happens. On a 2-5, the caster suffers 1 mortal wound. On a 6, the caster suffers D3 mortal wounds.
Spell Lore
You can choose or roll for one spell from the following table for each WIZARD in a Bretonnia army.
Lore of the Lady
-
Renewed Blessing.
Renewed Blessing has a casting value of 6.
If successfully cast, choose a friendly BRETONNIA unit within 12" of the caster. Until your next hero phase, the target unit gains the benefit of the Blessing of the Lady battle trait, even if it had lost it earlier in the battle. -
Champion's Spirit.
Champion's Spirit has a casting value of 7.
If successfully cast, choose a friendly BRETONNIA HERO within 18" of the caster. Until your next hero phase, that HERO can re-roll failed hit and wound rolls. -
Restoration.
Restoration has a casting value of 7.
If successfully cast, pick a friendly BRETONNIA unit within 12" of the caster. You can either heal D3+1 wounds that have been allocated to that unit or, if no wounds are currently allocated, you may return a number of slain models to that unit which have a combined Wounds characteristic equal to or less than the roll of a D3+1.
Pitched Battle Profiles
The table below provides points, minimum unit sizes and battlefield roles for the warscrolls and warscroll battalions in this book, for use in Pitched Battles. Spending the points listed on this table allows you to take a minimum-sized unit with any of its upgrades. Understrength units cost the full amount of points. Larger units are taken in multiples of their minimum unit size; multiply their cost by the same amount as you multiplied their size. If a unit has two points values separated by a slash (e.g. ‘60/200’), the second value is for a maximum-sized unit. Units that are listed as ‘Unique’ are named characters and can only be taken once in an army.
A unit that has any of the keywords listed on the Allies table can be taken as an allied unit by a Bretonnia army.
