philosophy
The goal of this homebrew is to provide a fun and interesting race option while also showing Trolls in a different light. Trolls that are sentient beings just like humans, elves, etc. Instead of monsters only interested in their next meal. I hope you all take what I've created here and let that spark your creativity for what Troll culture might look like in your world.
Half-Troll
Alignment. Is mostly determined by the experience the half-troll had during their upbringing, and thus will vary drastically between half-trolls.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Claws. Your claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Darkvision. You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen Smell. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made based on smell.
Powerful Build You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Regeneration As a bonus action on your turn, you can expend one of your hit dice and regain a number of hit points equal to the result + your Constitution modifier ( minimum of 1). If you take acid or fire damage you can't regain hit points in this way until the end of your next turn.
Languages You can speak, read, and write Common and Giant.
Elven Half-Troll
Elven half-trolls are the offspring of a fateful encounter between a troll and an elf. Because of their fey ancestry, elven half-trolls come in several hues and sport longer than average ears compared to others of their kind.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1 and your Dexterity score increase by 1.
Age. Elven half-trolls mature at the same rate as humans and can live to be 500 years old.
Size. Elven half-trolls commonly have a slender yet lean build and your height can range from 6 to 8 feet tall. Your size is medium.
Dexterous. Your claws gain the finesse property
Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Keen Hearing. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made based on hearing.
Natural Camouflage. While under intense focus you can change the hue and texture of your skin and hair to match that of your surroundings. You can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena.
Dwarven Half-Troll
Whether it be a drunken night or a loving bond forged deep underground, dwarven half-trolls are the offspring of a dwarf and a troll. They commonly have desaturated skin tones and grow hair far easier than most.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1 and your Strength score increase by 1.
Age. Dwarven half-trolls mature at the same rate as humans and can live to be 250 years old.
Size. While dwarven half-trolls are a fair bit shorter than others of their kind, their bodies are also much stockier. Your height can range from 5 to 6 feet tall. Your size is medium.
Dwarven Endurance. You have advantage on saving throws against poison. And If you roll a 1 or 2 when regaining health using your hit-dice you can reroll the die and must use the new roll, even if the new roll is a 1 or a 2.
Stocky. Heavy armor no longer reduces your movement if you don't meet the strength requirement for it.
Human Half-Troll
Human half-trolls are the offspring of a human and a troll. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have similar skin tones to that of a human, however, green skin and yellow eyes are also quite common amongst them.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1 and one other ability score of your choice increase by 1.
Age. Human half-trolls mature at the same rate as humans and can live to be 200 years old.
Size. Akin to their human parent, Human half-trolls have drastically varying builds from one another, your height can range from 6 to 8 feet tall. Your size is medium.
Curious Mind You gain proficiency in one skill of your choice and in one language of your choice
Determination. When you make a Wisdom saving throw, after you roll but before the outcome is revealed, you can choose to reroll it and take the new result. After you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
