Resurgent Soul

Sorcerous Origin for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition

Of Rebirth and Renewal

Since the multiverse began, there have been great beings of death and rebirth: the phoenix, the thunderbird, the fènghuáng, the bennu. These entities harness the spark of life itself to renew themselves and to bless others.

Source of Renewal

When you choose this subclass at 1st level, you can choose your Source of Renewal. This legendary being could be a long-lost ancestor, or you could've been born in their presence. Perhaps they blessed your birth from afar, or perhaps your newfound spark is a curse. In any case, your Source of Renewal can grant you immense power over the cycle of life and death, as well as a deep connection to the energies of creation.

Choose your Source of Renewal from the following table. The damage type associated with each Source is used by features you gain later.

Source of Renewal
Source Damage Type
Phoenix Fire
Thunderbird Lightning
Fènghuáng Psychic
Bennu Radiant

This connection preserves your essence in its entirety, meaning you can never be raised as undead.

Spark

Starting at 1st level, you gain the ability to unleash a spark of your resurgent power. As a bonus action, you can make a melee spell attack. On a hit, you deal damage equal to your sorcerer level and the target cannot regain hit points until the end of its next turn. The damage dealt is of a type defined by your Source of Renewal. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier. You regain all expended uses of this feature upon completion of a long rest.

Mantle of Vitality

At 1st level, you can manipulate the very forces of life to shroud yourself in a mantle of energy.

As a bonus action, you can unleash the energy inside of you as your eyes blaze with power. The mantle lasts for 1 minute, or until you extinguish it as a bonus action, and grants you the following benefits.

  • You shed bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet.
  • Any creature that hits you with a melee attack from within 5 feet of you or if it touches you takes damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1). The damage dealt is of a type defined by your Source of Renewal.
  • Whenever you use your Spark feature, it deals additional damage equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1).

Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Font of Life

At 6th level, you have learned to channel your Source of Renewal to facilitate healing and prevent death.

You learn the beacon of hope spell, which doesn't count against your number of sorcerer spells known. In addition, you can cast it by spending 3 sorcery points or by expending a spell slot.

Rebirth

At 14th level, you have mastered the spark within you. While under the effect of your Mantle of Vitality, you gain the following benefits:

  • You gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed and can hover.
  • You have resistance to all damage.
  • You can cast the revivify spell using 3 sorcery points and the reincarnate spell using 5 sorcery points.

Inextinguishable Essence

Beginning at 18th level, your spirit has become a roaring blaze of vitality.

Whenever you would die, the Source of Renewal within you convulses and erupts and you can choose to return to life with hit points equal to your sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier. If your original body no longer exists, for example as a result of the disintegrate spell, a new body is created for you, appearing at the location of your death. If the space where you died is occupied, you return at the nearest unoccupied space.

If you use this feature while your Mantle of Vitality was active:

  • Hostile creatures within 30 feet of you take damage equal to your sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier. The damage is the type determined by your Source of Rebirth.
  • Allied creatures within 30 feet of you regain a number of hit points equal to your sorcerer level + your Charisma modifier.

Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest.
