Why can't a Wizard do that?!

New Spells

Three new spells suitable for spellswords or other melee-focused spellcasters are presented here: Arcanist's Blade, Mage Plate, and Warding Shield. They appear on the artificer, warlock, and wizard spell lists.

Arcanist's Blade

Transmutation Cantrip

  • Casting Time: 1 Bonus Action
  • Range: Touch
  • Components: V, S, M (some silver and a weapon)
  • Duration: 1 Minute

The weapon you are holding is imbued with arcane power that guides your strikes. For the duration, you can use your spellcasting ability instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of melee attacks using that weapon, as long as the weapon doesn't have the two handed or heavy properties. The weapon also becomes magical, if it isn't already. The spell ends if you cast it again or if you let go of the weapon.

Mage Plate

2nd-level Abjuration

  • Casting Time: 1 Action
  • Range: Touch
  • Components: V, S, M (a steel disk)
  • Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour

You touch a willing creature. Until the spell ends, the target appears to be wearing an ethereal set of plate armor, and the target's AC can't be less than 16, regardless of what kind of armor it is wearing.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a 3rd- or 4th-level spell slot, the target's AC can't be less than 17. When you cast it using a 5th- or 6th-level spell slot, the target's AC can't be less than 18. When you cast it using a spell slot of 7th level or 8th levle, the target's AC can't be less than 19. When you cast it using a spell slot of 9th level, the target;s AC can't be less than 20.

Warding Shield

1st-level Abjuration

  • Casting Time: 1 Bonus Action
  • Range: Self
  • Components: V, S
  • Duration: 1 Minute

You extend your hand, and shimmering shield emits in an arc in front of you, granting you a +2 bonus to AC for the duration as long as your hand remains empty.

If you no longer have a free hand, or you use the hand emitting the shield for something else such as the somatic component of another spell, the shield dissipates. You can resummon the shield during the duration as a bonus action.
