We spent the rest of the afternoon searching stack after stack of ancient scrolls, looking for the one containing the information we needed but alas had no success. We were about to give up on this task, but then it showed up. Blocking the single ray of moonlight entering the vault was a robed figure, humanoid in shape but its face, oh its face-- it was not human, it resembled that of the night creatures we all knew well. And it spoke to us! But by the gods, it did not speak through its voice, it spoke through our minds! It spoke of great wonders and ancient secrets, of majestic lands and terrific visions. The only repayment it desired was more knowledge, our scrolls to aid in its collection.

The {name} race is an old one created by an ancient god, and tasked with maintaining the world's secrets. They are a mostly solitary race guided in part by the search for knowledge.

## Crafted by Gods

In order to preserve the world's oldest secrets, a long lost deity of knowledge created the {name} race in its image. Their creator gave them the divine order to archive all of the world's art and literature, doing so as a dying effort to carry forth its spirit. In order to achieve such a task, they were blessed with a long life and an open mind. {Name} are ever-living libraries and artful archivists.

## Avian Appearance

{Name} were made to resemble the creature most closely associated with wisdom: the owl. Despite lacking wings or the ability to fly, {name} have a coat of soft feathers and a long tail. Their arms and legs resemble those of humans, but have bird-like skin and sharply pointed nails. {Name} faces are entirely identical to those of wild owls, with a small beak and feathery features. They have large eyes that dimly glow at night and assist with both hunting small animals in moonlight and transcribing literature by candlelight.

Despite their unusual appearance, {name} are generally regarded as friendly due to their mild nature, and are welcomed by enlightened societies with open arms. They are seen as heralds of knowledge, and rarely have trouble finding shelter among commoners— provided they have access to a nearby library.

## Ancient Scholars

{Name} rarely see other creatures, let alone other {name} as they tend to be secluded. On the rare occasion that two {name} encounter each other, they will spend hours, if not days sharing information and translating valuable resources.

While {name} enjoy all forms of art, folklore, and literature, each one will specialize in a specific field, such as astronomy, theology, or a school of magic. {Name} are most often druids, clerics, or wizards.

Most {name} find their homes among stacks of literature or in abandoned structures, and will rarely ever leave their home. However, a few prefer to conduct their research in person through exploration and adventure.

## Birth of an {Name}
All {name} are born of magic itself. As they were originally created by a god and rarely interact with outsiders, the continuation of their species relies existing {name} becoming powerful magicians.

When an {name} reaches the peak of the potential, usually at 20th level, it feels a deep compulsion to undergo a month-long ritual. As they perform this ritual they spend time molding pure magic into the shape of an egg, a single one of which consumes material components worth 5,000 gold. The {name} spends another year in isolation protecting the egg while it grows in size with magical power, until it hatches into a new {name}.

A single {name} can create multiple eggs over its lifetime, but unfortunately most {name} die before they can create a single egg. Since these eggs are legendarily rare, powerful wizards and kings will hire armies to find and steal them, leading to the occasional {name} being born in the depths of the underdark or in the confines of a castle.

## Ibisean Names

{Name} names tend to be made in their native primordial tongue as compound words, which do not translate well into Common. Since their true name is often difficult for outsiders to pronounce, {name} who integrate with normal society adopt the nicknames given to them as their own.

{Name} nicknames are rarely gendered and primarily based on their practice. They will often be in the language of the surrounding areas.

## Ibisean Traits

As a created race {name} differ very little from one another. However, subtle differences do exist, primarily in their chosen field of research and coloration.

***Ability Score Increase.*** Your Intelligence score and your Wisdom score both increase by +2.

***Age.*** {Name} are nearly timeless, though not immortal. They reach maturity rather quickly around 50 years of age and can live for up to a thousand years.

***Alignment.*** Most {name} are neutral or good aligned, as their motivations lay in the preservation of knowledge. As peaceful creatures they tend to avoid combat, giving them a more lawful lean in nature.

***Size.*** {Name} are shorter than humans, but their feathery coat increases their apparent size. As a species they tend to be fairly lightweight due to their hollow bones. Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier.

***Speed.*** Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

***Darkvision.*** As primarily nocturnal creatures, {name} have adapted to see perfectly in moonlight. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of grey.

***Keen Senses.*** You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

***From the Stacks.*** You have proficiency in one of the following skills: Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion.

***Ancient Knowledge.*** Whenever you make an Intelligence (History) check related to the possible location, preparation, and preservation of ancient items and records, you can add twice your proficiency bonus, instead of any proficiency bonus you normally apply.

***Magical Research.*** Select either the cleric, druid, or wizard spell list. You know one cantrip from the chosen spell list, and can cast it at will. When you finish a long rest, you can exchange the cantrip for a different one from the same spell list. Your spellcasting ability for this spell is Intelligence for wizard, or Wisdom for cleric or druid.

***Languages.*** You can speak, read, and write Common, Auran, and one other language of your choice..

### {Name} Egg
*Tiny wondrous object (arcane focus), very rare*

This melon sized egg contains a developing embryo of primordial life. 12 months after the egg's creation, it hatches into a newborn {name} (roll 1d12 to determine the number of months left). The embryo has 1 hit point but has total cover from the outside world. If the embryo dies, the egg loses all of its magic.

Until the egg hatches, it radiates magical energy in a 5-foot radius, which is dim light. Creatures within this radius automatically succeed on saving throws to maintain concentration and recover the maximum amount possible from any healing received.

If any creature other than an {name} attempts to pick up or carry the egg, that creature automatically takes 1d8 force damage, both when they first touch it and at the start of each turn while holding it. A *dispel magic* speil cast on the egg suppresses this effect for 10 minutes.
