Patron: Ancient Dragon

Design: u/SitkaPad Art: sandara

Your patron is an ancient dragon, a long lived creature with knowledge of long lost secrets. This being's motivations are often cryptic, and sometimes unusual, and might involve a deep seeded greed or the settling of age-old grudges. You will often be tasked as an ambassador or to further expand their hoard (possibly considering you part of it). Beings of this sort include Zethrindor; Anwir Dupretiskava; Adamarondor; or other ancient dragons. In very rare cases, it could even be Bahamut or Tiamat.

Ancient Dragon Expanded Spell List

The Ancient Dragon lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.

Spell Level Spells
1st Chromatic Orb, Command
2nd Alter Self, Locate Object
3rd Blink, Protection from Energy
4th Polymorph, Secret Chest
5th Dominate Person, Geas

Hoard-Seeker's Tools

Starting at 1st level, your patron gives you the tools you need to expand his hoard, serve as his embassy, and other "necessary" tasks. You learn Draconic.

The presence of treasure registers on your senses like an alluring odor, or siren's song. As an action, you can open your awareness to detect such items. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any coinage, or magical items within 60 feet of you that is not behind total cover. You know the type, but not its identity (a flametongue, for instance). Within the same radius, you also detect the presence of any place or object that has been claimed as the territory of another dragon.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 + your Charisma modifier. When you finish a long rest, you regain all expended uses.

Elemental Affinity

At 1st level, you gain affinity with the element associated with your patron. Refer to the Patron table.

When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for the element of your patron, you can reroll the die and must use the new roll, even if the new roll is a 1 or a 2.

Additionally, you can change any effect that would deal force damage, to instead deal the damage type of your patron. If you later gain the Pact of the Blade feature, you may have your weapon deal damage appropriate to your patron as well, no matter the weapon's type.

Frightening Glare

Starting at 6th level, when you are the target of an attack roll and you can see the attacker, you may use your reaction to attempt to channel your patron's frightful presence to frighten the creature. They must make a Wisdom saving throw against your Warlock spell save DC or become frightened of you for the next minute. They may use an action to attempt the saving throw again, breaking the frighten condition on a success.

Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Elemental Absorption

Starting at 10th level, You have Resistance to the damage type associated with your Draconic patron.

When you are subject to damage associated with your Draconic patron, you may negate the damage and regain hit points equal to your Warlock level. If you would gain this Resistance from another source, you gain Immunity instead.

Once you absorb damage this way, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest.

Breath Weapon

Starting at 14th level, you patron has blessed you with its greatest gift. You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. It deals damage in an area according to your patron. When you use your breath weapon, all creatures in the area must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your patron. The DC of this saving throw is your Warlock spell save DC. A creature takes 8d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one.

At 18th level, the damage of your Breath Weapon increases by 2d6 to a total of 10d6.

You cannot use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Godly Patrons & Other Alterations

For Tiamat as your patron, select any chromatic dragon. For Bahamut, select the Silver dragon. You may substitute Cold for Force or Radiant with GM approval. Radiant and Force are powerful damage types. Radiant also interacts with Paladin's Smite. Your GM may swap Alter Self for Dragon's Breath.
