Dragonborn

Lore of the Races

The Dragonborn

In the World of Sperodin there are three types of Dragonborn. Each of the three types have five sub-types. The Three types are Chromatic, Metallic and Gemstone. Within the Chromatic there is Red, Blue, White, Green and Black Dragonborn. Within the Metallic there is Copper, Silver, Bronze, Brass and Gold. As for Gemstone there is Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire and Topaz

The Dragon Within

While Dragons are often seen as Majestic and Wise possessing an intellect superior to most races the Dragonborn are not of the same vein. The Dragonborn of Sperodin often fall to bits of rage. They are quick tempered and easily given to insanity. A Dragonborn that does not fight the chaos within becomes a slave to it. The Dragonborn claim this fight is against a Dragon that is inside of all of them. This claim while to a non-Dragonborn may appear foolish, it may not be far from the truth.

During the days of the first prime material plane, the divine primordial force Malacite, also known as the Prime Dragon, the All-Dragon and the Father of Every Dragon was one of the most revered powers. During the days of the second prime material plane Malacite created three lesser gods. Some say he birthed them, other say he created. Debate aside though they are a fruit of this labor and his children. These three children then created a plethora of mortal children. These children were the first incarnation of the dragons we know. During these days Malacite was still highly worshiped.

A great war would break out that put gods against gods. During this war the mortal dragons were slaughtered along with many humanoid followers of Malacite and his children. Malacite would not stand idle at this insult. He took shards of the souls of the slaughtered dragons and shards of the souls of the dead humanoid followers and then he melded them together and gave unto them the scales of this own flesh. The fruit of this action would be the Dragonborn.

When a Dragonborn claims to be fighting the Dragon within, they are claiming to be fighting the shards of the dragon souls in them. A Dragonborn is always at war with itself as the shards of the humanoid soul is always at odds with the shards of the dragon soul. Apart the two souls may not of been prone to chaos but when the two are put at odds chaos is often the only fruit.

When the Dragonborn were first created they were not meant to be a civilized race. They were not meant to play knights and politics. They were not meant to build nations, cities, houses and rear families. They were meant for vengeance and war. They were created to be a weapon. There is a blood lust within them that adds to the chaos of the conflicting souls.

It was towards the end of the second prime material plane when the Dragonborn were created. When the plane fell Malacite moved them from the ruins of the plane and into his own demi-plane. Once Askyiska created the third prime material, the plane of Sperodin, Malacite unleashed the Dragonborn on Sperodin. When they were released the races on the plane that were apart of the previous plane saw them as Devils and declared them to be evil. This stigma persists in the view of many to this present day.

Flying City of Gemstone & Metal

The three Children Malacite created that were in a way lesser-gods would see the struggles of the Dragonborn on Sperodin and in a means to give them something of their own they would create for the Dragonborn a city of Gemstone and Metal in the sky. It is said somewhere high in the Sky of Sperodin this city looms watching the land. It is said to loom in utter chaos as well. Many Dragonborn who manage to resist the Shard of the Dragon Soul within them and find sanity against the chaos will leave the city of Gemstone and Metal to cut out a life of their own in the land below.

Gemstone Dragonborn as PC

The Gemstone Dragonborn are not a stock 5E Race. The rules for Gemstone Dragonborn as player characters can be found within the Strongholds and Followers book put out by Matt Colville

Religion, Reproduction & Age

Dragonborn typically do not worship the pantheon of sperodin. They still worship Malacite and his three children, Thanatoss, Mortemumrita and Gilvaldurrim. Typically Dragonborn only reproduce with their own sub-type. When they reproduce with their own subtype and a child is conceived the female will lay eggs. If two Dragonborn of different sub-types reproduce and a child is conceived the female will have a child take root in the womb like a mammal. The child will have scales of both sub-types but will have the racial effects of the mother. These Dragonborn children are additionally sterile and often cast out from Dragonborn society. The reason for the mix in how children are bore is a result of the mixed souls within the Dragonborn. Most Dragonborn live to be around 75. However if one can resist the chaos and find sanity, it is said they can live for hundreds of years.
