Periwinkle's Monster Meats
“I can’t believe we found this!” Meawin clamored , clapping and hopping in delight at the exquisite find. Caffeen rolled her eyes and droned “It’s a corpse.” “Ahh, but it’s not any corpse. It’s a unicorn corpse, and it’s fresh! Probably killed in the last hour or so from the lack of flies about.” Meawin said optimistically as she dismounted. Her steps were almost a bounce and every action was with great purpose. Meawin grabbed her backpack off her horse and began to set down a small series of intricate tools which appeared to be used for cooking. Caffeen clearly disgusted, sneered and pointed to the remains of the dead beast. Caffeen exclaimed poignantly ”It’s got no horn! It’s just a useless body! Why are you even messing with it? There is no reason to desecrate it any further.” Meawin looked up at Caffeen and cracked a sly smirk “That’s where you’re wrong, sour nut.”
Meawin walked a few paces out and looked around with one hand on her hip and the other at her lip. She then gave a nod and grabbed a small statue from her backpack and placed it carefully on the ground. She then drew a butcher’s knife from her belt and a small bone and began an eligant dance, chanting and flailing her arms about. The air began to swirl around her as the leaves rustled from the sudden wind. Meawin's chanting seemed archaic and wasn’t anything that Caffeen was familiar with. Her dancing was pretty, almost like a child's ballet but with more elegance and a lot more stabbing. Magical power poured from Meawin’s aura and began to circle the tiny statue. Slowly, it began to grow bigger and bigger, until it filled the size of a small house. The image shimmered blue and bright green, not completely visible and blurred the more Caffeen stared at it. Suddenly, with a loud POP! a small shop ruptured into existence. “Tada! Periwinkle’s Meat Market!” Meawin exclaimed with grand bravado. Confused and surprised, Caffeen looked about at the amazement of what she just witnessed. Before her was a small, quaint shop with a large market window peering outward. Overhead was a beautiful blue and green awning and underneath it was a still swinging sign that read “Periwinkle’s Meat Market – Get in the Heat with my Spicy Meat!”. Meawin placed her knife and bone back in her pack and tied off her horse to a tree near the entrance. “Don’t just stand there all slack-jawed, help me drag this inside!”

Using this Guide
This guide is intended for both players and Dungeon Masters alike. It gives options for an alternate downtime activity in a simple format to determine the value and cost of the creatures that adventures kill on a regular basis and converts it into income at the end of the month. Some of these values are based on real world concepts that are translated into a fun and meaningful activity. This guide does it's best to create a simple process with as few rules as possible but still feels like you are butchering a creature. It leaves many of the nuances between the player and the Dungeon Master.
Butchering is based on the core rules of tool proficiency and uses Survival as the base skill. This means that butchering should fit into any realm or homebrew game. Below you will find equipment to begin a butcher's career for new and existing characters. Training for Butcher's tools follows the standard rule of 250 days at 5gp per month.
Butchering Difficulty Check
Creature Size | DC Skill Check |

Gargantuan | 25 |

The Art of Meat
When butchering, there are two terms you should be familiar with, corpse and carcass. A Corpse is the full body of a creature. This is the creature that just died and contains the head, skin, meat, blood, and whatever else might be in the body. Carcass is just the meat and bones with all other parts removed. Typically this is the head, skin, feet, guts and blood. This yield can vary on many conditions but for the purpose of this guide a yield of 56% is used.
Butchers are not farmers. If a butcher wants to breakdown a creature, they must but it or kill it. Markup of butchering services is at 12%. Most cities operate on a fee base system. These are covered by the seller which sells the meat at a much higher premium.
Butcher's Equipment
A butcher uses specialized equipment to achieve precise cuts each time. Here is a collection of equipment that can be used as starting equipment for any character who begins as a butcher. If you are buying these, you can purchase the tools and pack for the price shown.
Butcher's Tools (15g). 7lbs. These tools are needed to perform any type of complex butchery. They are rolled up in a cloth bag to protect them from the elements and keep them organized. Contains a skinning knife, filet knife, cleaver, butcher's knife, butcher's fork, gut hook, bone hand saw, scissors, and 4 meat hooks.
Butcher's Pack (25g). Includes a backpack, butcher's tools, hammer, bedroll, large cloth sheet, mess kit, waterskin, soap, tinderbox, 5 torches, sealing wax, 4 lbs of salt, whetstone, common clothes, apron. The pack has 2 hemp ropes of 50 feet each strapped to it.
The breakdown of a carcass to sellable meat needs to be within 12 hours of death unless additional measures are taken to preserve it. Necessity is the mother of invention! It is up to you to figure out how to handle this. You may find yourself adventuring in a strange land that doesn't eat meat, or you are deep in a dungeon where you simply are not going to be able to transport a corpse, much less sell it. How you choose to handle a valuable kill, transport it, butcher it and prepare it for sale is between you and your DM. A highly valuable animal may be better alive and preserved for future slaughter or captured and transported to prevent the 12 hours spoilage. You may choose to just prepare a few choice cuts for your you or your party leaving the rest of the corpse for nature. Talk to your DM and see what your options are in your current situation.
Hirelings and Apprenticeships
When a creature is greater than the capacity of one individual, you must hire assistants to help in order to breakdown the creature in a day's time. You can also take on an apprentice to help you. A butcher can only have one butcher's apprentice at a time. Each hireling cost 2g per day and cuts time by 8 hours. An apprentice is free but does not improve time since you spend your time teaching. Hirelings are paid for a full day regardless if the full day is used. If an apprentice is another player, they must pay the 1g per day. Be sure they record the time spent butchering so they too can one day become butchers. Butchers pay 1g a month in guild dues in order to hire hirelings. This is automatically deducted from the revenue of the corpse.
Meat is Money
Being a member of the Butcher's Guild has its advantages. Almost all business that sells food to some degree will order meat from the Butcher's Guild. This gives you great opportunity in securing a place to sell your meat. All meat is sold on consignment to the nearest meat shop, inn, store or market. If you are unable to find a shop, the Butcher's Guild will buy the meat at half price. This guide assumes the butcher sells all meat on consignment and must return to collect their earnings each month. If you are near a city or town, you will always find a place to sell. However, if you are in a remote area of the world, you may find that you have to transport your meat first. Salting your meat will provide you 2 days worth of travel without spoilage. It is assumed if you can transport the meat, you can sell it in full. Roll a DC of 15 to see if you can find any place nearby that will buy from you. About 5% of your meat will spoil before being sold.
It's not all Skin and Bones
Things don't always go as planned and mistakes can happen. Being a butcher is dangerous work. A common phrase in the trade is "A tired butcher is a fingerless one". When performing a skill check to butcher a creature, roll a d20 as you would any skill. A critical failure with the Butcher's Tool proficiency results in a roll from the Butchering Complications table. When a butcher does a good job they may find the quality of the meat is better or find rare gems in the gut of the beast. On a critical success, roll from the Butchering Critical Success table.
Lack of Skill
Unlike normal adventures, butchers are efficient enough that they can consistently produce the same amount of meat each time. Adventurers who want to attempt to collect some amount of meat can do so by rolling a Survival skill check on the No Proficiency table. Failed Survival checks from unskilled adventurers results in only half the meat they would have received and a roll from the Butchering Complication table.
Untrained adventurers do not have the connections a standard butcher does so they must negotiate each and every sell if they wish to try and sell their meats. The cuts are poor and lack any precision that a normal butcher can achieve. Most places buy this meat at stew meat prices or 1c per lbs.

Butchering Reference Chart
The Butchering charts is the meat and bones of this guide. It shows what income the player receives should they be able to butcher the animal listed. It contains a large number of animals from across the realms. The best meat comes from beasts and general monstrosities, which are listed. Aborrant, demonic or other unatural creatures are undesirable by common standards and are not. Taste is the texture and flavor the beast is most similar to. XP is the XP a player gains by butchering the respective creature. Corpse and Carcass Lbs are the weights in pounds. The Carcass Lbs reflects the yield of 50% and spoilage rate of 5%. Hireling Cost is the cost to hire additional hirelings in order to butcher the creature within 8 hours and is automatically deducted from the monthly income. Carcass Value is the total potential value of the meat harvested. Income is the amount of money a player receives at the end of the month by selling their meat on consignment. Dangers are any potential effect that needs to be avoided while butchering the creature.

Pricing per Cut
Most meats break down to specific cuts. This is what the average customer is going to request and buy. If this is something of interest, you can use the charts below to create cuts for individual sale. You can also use them to determine what cuts are more popular than others or a base percentage to figure out how much that specific cut is worth.
Crab, Calamari Fish, Snake and Turtle don't have cuts and are simply sold in bulk.
Lets say you want to see how much a chuck steak of a creature is worth. You use the carcass value and use percentage of the value for that cut. The chart also shows you how much meat in the carcass is used for that type. If you use a cow, which has a carcass value is 12g, you see that Chuck cuts are 30% of the carcass but are only worth 11% of the total. This comes to 1g 30s.

This document is an attempt to add some variety without getting into the full complexities of meat marketing and how to price meat. Cuts of meat can vary. A roast can be cut into steaks. Some areas might sell brisket at a higher value. It's up to you to determine what impact this will have in your game. This document may give you some ideas to expand your own game with the complexity you want.
Spells
Periwinkle's Vivisecting Hands
3rd level transmutation
- Casting Time: 1 action
- Range: Self
- Components: V, S, M (A butcher's knife)
- Duration: Concentration, up to 8 hours
You create an aura around your hands that allows the precise cutting of dead flesh, sinew and bone. This effect has no effect on the living or undead and has no effect on constructs or plants. Casting this spell allows all butchering times to be one hour less.
At Higher Levels. when you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the efficiency improves decreasing the butchering time by 2 hours for each slot level above 3rd. Butchering time cannot be lowered below 1 hour. This spell has no effect on butchering times less than an hour.
Periwinkle's Meat Market
6th level conjuration
- Casting Time: 5 minutes
- Range: 120 feet
- Components: V, S, M (A miniature portal carved from wood, a small piece of bone, and a butcher's knife, each worth at least 1gp)
- Duration: 24 hours
You conjure an extradimensional butcher shop in range that last for the duration. You choose where the entrance and sales window is located. The entrance shimmers faintly and is a size of your choosing. The sales window is brightly lit and shows prominently in place. The Sales window is 7 feet tall and 10 feet wide with a bar 3 feet high. There is an overhanging awning over the sales window that allows meat or other products to be hung for purchase. There is a sign hanging from the awning of your own design. You and any creature you designate when you cast the spell can enter the extradimensional shop as long as the portal remains open. The area outside the sales window under the overhang is open to the public. You can open and close the entrance or the sales window if you are within 30 ft of it. when closed, the entrance is invisible but the sales window remains visible. Beyond the portal is a decent butcher's shop with a large storage area.
The atmosphere is clean, fresh and cool. Meat, vegetables and other food stuffs do not spoil and does not age while in the Meat Market.
You can create any floor plan you like, but the space can't exceed 15 cubes, each cube being 10 feet each side. The shop is furnished and decorated as you choose. It contains enough equipment for 10 butchers and supplies fresh water. Furnishings and other objects created by this spell dissipate into smoke if removed from the shop. When the spell ends, any living or undead creature inside the extradimensional space are expelled into the open spaces nearest to the entrance. Any gear and supplies are also expelled. however, food supplies and food stuff in containers remain and will be present on future summoning.
Casting this spell in the same spot every day for a year makes this effect permanent.
