Grey Portrait Sorcerer Origin
\pagebreak ### The Grey Portrait The Grey Portrait is an incarnation of one's desire. It could also be likened to a piece of the soul. Owners of a Grey Portrait are said to never age, to be immune to harm, and to possess a guile rivalling even that of the most powerful devils. The actuallity of the matter however is far more peculiar.
A Grey Portrait is a piece of art, a masterpiece rivalling even portraits of kings. However owners of the portrait protect it like a child, often hiding it from the eyes of others. A Grey Portrait is a metaphor for the soul, a manifestation of desire, and to lose the Portrait is to surrender these things. So the body of one who owns the portrait may be durable, however the soul is as thin as paper. ### To Be Painted Owners of a Grey Portrait age at a reduced rate. The Portrait is desire captured, and all desire to be forever young. Youth is to be potent, to be at the peak of power, and many seek out the means to acquire a Grey Portrait for this reason alone. However The Painted quickly realize that with youth comes pride. Vanity and other sins plague The Painted like a curse, and one is always moments away from sinking into indulgence. Those who know of The Painted know them for their incredible indulgence and capability for sin. Even at a base level, being forever young invites one to believe they're invincible, to throw away morality and caution to pursue ever greater pleasures. However it goes beyond even that, to own a Grey Portrait is to invite desire of ever increasing power into your heart. You are a creature of desire. No matter who you were before, your ever want haunts you now like a powerful hunger. To lose control is to surrender to this hunger, to pursue your desire like a starved beast. ### A Reflection of Sin A Grey Portrait does not necessarily have to be a portrait. Some are masks, statues, or figurines. However they always depict their subject down to the finest details. Even worse, if the owner begins to sin, then the portrait changes. It's always small to start out, the person in the portrait looks down on the viewer, or they smile something sinister. However as The Painted sin more and more, the person in the painting becomes monstrous. Cracked skin, fanged teeth, it goes on and on. Eventually the portrait becomes a dramatization of the owner exaggerated to a gruesome degree. A killer may be depicted as a crouched creature with sharp claws and blood soaked teeth, a lustful person could be depicted as a towering beast drooling at the sight of fresh prey. The Portrait is dramatic, but it never lies. If you want to understand the subject, simply look at the portrait. \columnbreak ### To Paint the Portrait Few know the true means to acquire a portrait. If it became public knowledge, towns would be overrun with maddened immortals. Some say you gain a portrait through a deal with the devil, others say that the Grey Portrait is the ultimate form of art and to create one, you must pour your heart and soul into a piece. There's also mention of the wandering Salesman, who'll gift you a mask unlike any other and be gone by dawn. More often than not, those that receive a portrait have never even heard of it.
As you make a Grey Portrait Sorcerer, work with your DM to find out how you obtained your portrait, and how your character reacted. Your characters initial reaction to their newfound life may be an omen for what's to come.
##### Prone to Passion As an optional rule, DMs may ask Grey Portrait Sorcerers to name a vice of theirs. Whenever the player comes into contact with their vice, have them roll a Wisdom save. On a failed save, they become irrational and *must* have the object of their attention. Possible vices include fancy clothes, valuable magic items, or expensive food and drink. This reflects the desire that Grey Portrait Sorcerers have. They're always one second away from losing control.
\pagebreak ### Grey Portrait Sorcerous Origin Your magic comes from an ancient and powerful object known as a Grey Portrait. The object reflects your every choice, dramatizing your sins and virtues for the world to see. Immortal youth is in your grasp, but death is all too near. ### Origin Spells When you choose this sorcerous origin, you gain access to the following spells, which do not count against your spells known but can only be cast once you reach the required sorcerer level. | Sorcerer Level | Spell Level | Spell Name| |:---------------:|:-----------:|:---------:| | 1st | 1st | Charm Person | | 3rd | 2nd | Suggestion | | 5th | 3rd | Hypnotic Pattern | | 7th | 4th | Phantasmal Killer | | 9th | 5th | Modify Memory | | 11th | 6th | Mass Suggestion | ### The Grey Portrait Beginning at 1st level, you've acquired and become bound to a Grey Portrait. The Grey Portrait is a small or medium object with 10 AC and hitpoints equal to twice your Sorcerer Level + your Charisma modifier. It has resistance to all damage, weighs between 5 and 15 lbs (your choice), and uses your statistics for saving throws. Using your action, you can see through your portraits eyes on your turn.
Whenever you take damage, you can use your reaction to redirect the damage to your portrait. You can do so after the damage is rolled. You can repair your portrait at a rate of 1 hitpoint per minute. Spells that require your body to resurrect you, such as *revivify* can be cast on your portrait. If your portrait is destroyed, you die, and you can only be restored to life by a *wish* spell. ### Enchanting Persona Also at 1st level you gain the *friends* cantrip if you didn't already know it. When you cast the spell, it only has verbal components.
You also gain proficiency in the *deception* skill if you didn't already have it. ### Shadow Servant Beginning at 6th level, you've learned how to impose your will onto the world. Using your action and 3 sorcery points, you can sever your shadow to magically summon a Shadow Servant at your position. The Shadow Servant acts as if by the *find familiar* and is detailed at the end of this document. Your Shadow Servant disappears at dawn, dropping any items stored in its pocket dimension.
\columnbreak ### Timeless Masterpiece Also at 6th level, you no longer age and cannot be aged by magical means, nor do you require food, water, or air. You also gain resistance to poison damage and are immune to the *poisoned* condition. ### Visiage of Desire At 14th level, you've learned to twist those around you, supplanting yourself as their idol. Choose a creature that can hear you. You then spend a minute magically convincing the target of your importance to it. The creature must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it regards you as it's most treasured friend, and becomes frantic at the thought of displeasing you or making you unhappy. The creature will do everything it can to make you happy and may become manic if it feels it has displeased you.
Creatures that can't be charmed are immune to this feature. The charm wears off after 24 hours. Once a creature is targeted by this feature, it is immune to being targeted again for 24 hours. You must complete a long rest to use this feature again. ### Trapped in a Canvas At 18th level, you've learned to trap others in their own portrait. You can spend a long rest and 1,000 GP worth of fine painting supplies to perform a ritual to create a Grey Portrait for someone you know. The individual must be someone you've conversed with for at least 1 hour. You must know their name, age, and have seen their true face. When completed, the portrait is a medium object with 15 AC and ten hitpoints.
While the subject of the portrait is looking at it, you can force them to make a Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the target is trapped in the portrait as if by the *imprisonment* spell, using the portrait as the material component. The individual can look however you want in the portrait. For instance, a soldier could be turned into a beggar, or an old man could become a young boy. While in the portrait, the target cannot move and cannot be targeted by anyone other than you. If the portrait is destroyed, the trapped creature dies.
If you are killed, any creatures trapped by this feature are released from their portraits. Any creature trapped in a portrait does not age, or require food, drink, rest, or air. \pagebreak ___ > ## Shadow Servant >*Small, Chaotic Neutral* > ___ > - **Armor Class** 12 > - **Hit Points** 16 (3d8+3) > - **Speed** 40 ft. >___ >|STR|DEX|CON|INT|WIS|CHA| >|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| >|6 (-2)|14 (+2)|13 (+1)|6 (-2)|10 (0)|8 (-1)| >___ > - **Skills** stealth +6 > - **Damage Resistances** Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Thunder; Bludgeoning, Piercing, And Slashing From Nonmagical Weapons > - **Damage Immunities** Necrotic, Poison > - **Condition Immunities** Exhaustion, Frightened, Grappled, Paralyzed, Petrified, Poisoned, Prone, Restrained > - **Senses** Darkvision 30 feet, Passive Perception 10 > - **Languages** Understands those spoken by it's creator but can't speak. > - **Challenge** 0 > ___ > ***Amorphous.*** The shadow servant can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. > ***Shadow Stealth.*** While in dim light or darkness, the shadow can take the Hide action as a bonus action.
