Ornthalas' Grimoire
Kingdoms rise and fall. Disaster and prosperity ebb and flow. There are precious few constants in this world, but truth is eternal. This tome is a collection of such truths
Bahamut
weapon (rapier), legendary (requires attunement by a creature of...see note 1)
This silvered rapier of fey design contains a spark of Bahamut and has taken his name as its own. Bahamut was created with a higher purpose and seeks out warriors who exhibit traits of its creator to fulfill this drive. Over the millenia, it has passed from owner to owner, occasionally finding a being worthy of serving as Bahamut's champion, but often lying dormant in the hands of an unworthy. Its search has taken a toll and the spark which grants Bahamut life is weakened. Perhaps in the hands of its true champion, the spark will be rejuvenated -- revealing the weapon's memory and true purpose.
Fading Spark. The spark of Bahamut inhabiting this sword has weakened over the ages and, as such, its memory, purpose, and powers have faded and weakened. When first obtained, Bahamut is in its Glimmering form. As the wielder and Bahamut grow in experience, the spark strengthens as it enters its Lucent form and beyond (see note 2), losing the properties of its previous, more limited, form.
Tactician. As a veteran of a multitude of battles against myriad foes, Bahamut has advice for nearly every situation and has no qualms sharing, wanted or not. Consulting the sword during combat as a free action grants a +2 bonus to your next ability check related to the current obstacle.
Glimmering. The sword's memories and powers are weak from a millenia of false champions. The sword emits a dim, blue light from its blade that extends 5 feet. When its wielder misses a melee attack roll, Bahamut berates them about proper combat technique and rolls two d4's. If the result on both die are the same, add that result to the missed attack roll, potentially changing the attack into a hit. Bahamut yearns to find a champion and refuses to let its wielder use any weapons other than itself until its wielder proves themselves, or fails in the process. Finding a worthy wielder will strengthen its spark as Bahamut transitions into its Lucent state.
Lucent. The spark which inhabits this sword has begun to awaken as Bahamut and its champion grow in strength and experience. Thw sword emits a dim, blue light from its blade that extends 5 feet and during combat this blue light increases in intensity to bright, platinum-blue light within 10 feet and dim light for 10 feet beyond that. The wielder gains a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon and its damage die changes to a d10. Only its true champion can further awaken the sword, which then changes to its Resplendent form.
Resplendent. Unknown
Sentience. Bahamut is a sentient lawful, good weapon. It has the following statistics...(see note 3). The weapon communicates with its wielder with painting like images via telepathy and can do so whenever its blade is exposed. Its wielder gains the ability to communicate in return in the same way while Bahamut is held and unsheathed.
Personality. Until its wielder proves themselves, Bahamut is dismissive and patronizing as it has grown weary of its myriad false champions. Once its wielder is determined worthy, a bond is formed much like that of a mentor (see note 4).
Notes
- I am still unsure how or why this sword found its way to me. Is it me, or simply a part I am playing in a larger game.
- The full extent of this weapon's power remains yet unseen.
- The sword appears to be highly intelligent and wisened by years of battle. However, its curt responses and inflated ego sometimes makes even myself appear charming in comparison.
- This weapon grows ever more protective of me as our bond grows and it struggles to discern the fate of myself and my companions as laid out by the divines. It has shown itself to be overzealous in the past. While I am eager to discover this weapon's true nature, I must remain cautious -- even a small spark of such a powerful being is worthy of trepidation.
Cloak of Legion
cloak (wonderous)
This cloak made of dark blue wool was created by Tobias Brockhouse. It alerts the wearer to hidden dangers (see note 1).
Notes
- My attempts to discern the cloaks exact function have been futile. Sometimes I cannot help but think that I am being toyed with by the halfling. Further study is required.
